When do you think a new Desktop CPU manufacturer will come into play?

Intel and AMD have been around for a while, but when do you think they will go down? They surely can't rule the world FOREVER. But maybe they can

I doubt it'll be within the next 5 years, but maybe within 10 years we might see a new manufacturer on the market for Desktop CPU's.

It's a strange market, this. For another CPU maker to come about would mean their platforms would have to have Windows ported to them for them to become big.

 

Also, ARM and IBM exist, but current Windows supports neither architecture.

I think sooner than 15 years but not much.  Other chip manufactures are working with 64 bit Architecture now.

i dont think ill live long enough to see a another Desktop/Mobile/Workstation CPU maker coming to market

AMD licenses the x86 architecture from Intel, other manufacturers will have a hard time getting into the market without paying Intel to use x86.

In 15 years, CPUs might become more like GPUs. CPUs as they are now will be irrelevant.

It won't happen for a very long time. There used to be three major players in the 0x86 game but cyrix could not compete and went belly up, then VIA tried to enter the market with mixed results but ultimately even they are finding it hard to compete.

ARM Holdings is the company that develops the ARM architecture.

Most likely an established chip maker like Qualcomm, Samsung or Nvidia. They would need the manufacturing power to make them cheaply just to enter the market and they would have to have an equivalent to the higher end AMD and Intel cpus to draw in the enthusiasts.

Not too soon. Motorola, Cyrix, and VIA all bit the dust, and I think people are learning the lesson that Intel, AMD, and the current mobile chip makers will rule for at least 10 more years.

It cost Intel over US$5,000,000,000 just to build its latest (14nm) volume fabrication facility. Not too many organizations are willing to take that level of risk.
