Yeah! It can happen with anyone and at anytime. But, once your steam account is hacked, you desperately try to get it back and it has happened with me. My account got hacked two days ago and after a frantic search on my PC's HDD for the receipt I got from steam for a licensed CSGO key, I sent it back to then on steam support and got my account back. I'm still in shock as to how this happened. And yeah! That man who hacked my account enjoyed CSGO and my skins for a 2 day session. I remember having only 100 hrs in CS and realized that it increased to 123 hrs. Yeah! Someone is being busy. After a full PC scan (on recommendation of steam support), i realized that a keylogger trojan was resident on my HDD. Luckily it was only steam i had been using and no banking stuff and etc. The keylogger locked my dad's account which did not have password protection. Mine was a microsoft account with two-factor authentication. So, i was still safe. I'm still not sure whether he attempted hacking in CSGO on my account but i know that my account is now back and i'm happy about it.

That is the power a virus can achieve if it resides on your system. The keylogger was resilent enough to avoid Windows Defender's realtime protection. I hate you microsoft.

Had to run Kaspersky's rescue tool to get that keylogger removed without booting the system.

Currently I now have enabled two factor authentication on all of my accounts i own. Including steam guard.

So, this is my story. Please recommend me some good internet security options so i can get rid of windows defender.

Now, this is a story all about how

I watched to much porn, my computer got flipped upside down

Id like you to take a minute so heres a wall of text up there

As I tell you my tale of Steam being hacked to elsewhere

In my momma's basement I built and played

On my keyboard is where I spent most of my days

Chillin out, min maxing acting all cool

And be playin CSGO before the l33t kids get off school

When a couple of porn click, I know I was up to no good

Started placing virus' beyond Defenders hood

I couldn't play 2 days I got a little scared

Found a receipt to CSGO said F you to the hacker out there!

this is why if you have anyone else using the same PC, or if you do anything even remotely suspicious, you run a second Anti virus instead of relying on the shit that is windows defender. Avast free might use resources like a fat pig, but it does a pretty good job stopping everything but the cutting edge.

Glad I'm on Linux. I can play csgo without worrying about this type of crap. I don't play csgo btw, I meant if I wanted to.

Microsoft says that windows 10 is secure. But when it comes to microsoft's own antivirus, it is a piece of garbage.

AV is only 15% effective according to most researches. You are still gonna be screw if your computer catches a virus.

i wouldnt recommend a paid AV. use a free one. I myself prefer Avast antivirus, but like i said its a bit of a hog.

Dont go to shady places.

Thats literally all you have to do. Run an adblocker and dont click even remotely suspicious links. And I would highly argue that against the overwhelming majority of viruses you can get an AV is WAY more than 15% effective. Maybe against nothing but the cutting edge of viruses and hacks sure, but 99% of viruses aren't cutting edge. they're just preying on old and outdated machines or people who don't know better.

Nothing is or ever will be 100% secure. Not even paid-for solutions. The best defense is CommonSense™ and a decent heuristics based security solution, such as MBAM Premium or Emsisoft Abti-Malware.

The best defense is ultimately user awareness. 99% of malwares are faults of users. Don't do dumb things.

Anti virus is still useful. In fact i use Symantec antivirus for Linux because I am quite paranoid.  I also cover my  camera with a sticker. Hackers are very real.

But what do you think? Even after removing the keylogger by kaspersky's rescue disk has completly removed it or still there are traces and i need to clean format my system?

Yes do a fresh install unless you keep back up images of your entire PC, which is considered being one step ahead of the virus/ scammer, then you can re-image your system to a previous back-up, and it will be like nothing ever happened.

Those who deny freedom to others deserve it not for themselves (Abraham Lincoln,1808-1865; 16th US president).

You may want to watch it as one day you may end up waking up with a VAC/game ban. Many hacked accounts are used for hacking in a game.

Looking at my signature are we now? Well too bad there's nothing here...

Do you happen to have Steam Guard activated? It helps in preventing someone unauthorised from accessing your account.

At the time of hacking no. But i learnt from my mistake and decided to keep steam guard activated and asking a code for each and every system of mine and to even change the password

Yeah, good call. Better to be safe than to go through another incident like this one. Saves you a lot of grief knowing people who want to login need that Steam guard code.

Likely no, traces sure, but extremely doubtful anything harmful was left, just crumbs hinting at what was there.

Just pickup a free AV and be done with it lol, then stop going to shady porn sites and especially dont click ads. I know hot single moms in your area want your d, but dont pay the price of russian super viruses.
