What OS / File system should I use for a File server???

What os do you like to work with?

 

There is windows server, freenas, unraid, ubuntu, centos.

 

install them and see what you like?

you got the 2.5 version? Id get the 3.5 if you can. There much better for use as a nas.

 

How much storage do you want in the nas?

 

You can also use sata drives in it, thats probably a much better option here.

Id just get some 2tb 2.5 in laptop drives.

 

Probably run unraid if you want something simple and easy to expand.

I have used FreeNAS with ZFS in the past and currently using Windows Server 2019 with ReFS + Storage Spaces.

 

Both are great but FreeNAS is free if you have a tight budget.
