Hardline Loop my SLI or swap for 2080ti?

EvelynX

Hey LTT fans!

I've got two Strix 1080ti's in SLI but oh my does the top boi choke now that theres a second card under there! I've had to dial back my boost from 2000ish down to 1900ish and my power limit down back to 105 to prevent it cooking my house and cats. We're hitting 90c unless I put the fans in jet engine mode.

The question is, should I sink a grand into a full hardline loop to go with my LianLi 011 dynamic or should I replace the GPUs with an AIO 2080ti which would solve the breathing room issue in one go?

I wanted an excuse to do a hardline loop anyway but on the other hand the 2080ti would kind render the need for it moot as it wont be an oven in there.

Specs

CPU: Ryzen 7 2700x

RAM: 16gb 3466mhz Cl14 - G Skill Trident Z RGB.

Cooler: Thermaltake Riing 360.

Case: LianLi 011 Dynamic

GPU: Strix OC 1080ti SLI

Gaming with: Asus GTX 1080ti Strix OC SLI @1950mhz & r7 2700x@4.2ghz / GSkill 3466mhz CL14 (1440p165hz)
Loitering with: Galaxy S8+

you are almost always better off with a single more powerful card than you are with SLI when gaming is involved.

So... 2080ti I say!

also, it would be great to see you putting that hardware to do some good in its downtime, we are currently competing in a BOINC event if you are interested.

Im sure it is always better to have a single card but to replace two 1080ti's with a single 2080ti?

And as for folding, maybe if my GPU werent sitting at 90c at load haha but thats what im hoping to solve today.
Watercooling my existing hardware vs buying a new GPU. :D

The thing is, SLi isnt all that consistent, you can get 50% improvement, or even a small unimprovment(cant think of a better word) in some games compared to a single card.

P.S. this isnt folding, currently we are crunching CPU projects only here.

Cant you drop the card to a lower PCIe slot?

depending on resolution the chip may not matter all that much...

People act like AMD CPUs are still bulldozer... Please... its not like they are 50% slower than Intel anymore.

People also disregard context and make assumptions because they dont have that context. As if the comparison is 2700x vs 8700k or 2700x vs 9900k.

Whereas in nearly all cases an upgrade comes down to a budget.

My context was upgrading from a 4 thread i5 to either AMD or Intels high end platform. One option would have cost me nearly £200-300 more for the kind of quality component I wanted and it sure as heck wasnt £200-300 more performance. ?

Its sad though that I have to justify my build decisions to trolls who call people trolls without any idea about the build and prove from the get go they weren't paying attention in the first place. ?

Exactly!

When you look at cost it isnt 2700x vs 9900k, its more like 2700(because Oc'in) vs 9400(because higher platform costs and intel shortages) or so.

when I got my 1700 it was a choice between 1700 and the 7600(non-K) after taking into account platform costs too.

Case choice is really important when running 2 GTX 1080 tis on air.  My SLI case is an old HAF X with 4 200mm fans & 1 180mm.

My 1080 tis are now in a SilverStone Technology RL06BR-GP and are Keeping cool with a i9 9900k.

I replaced my 1080 tis with a EVGA FTW3 Ultra RTX 2080 ti. It is slower in SLI games but faster in most.

Going AIO is not a bad idea. My FTW3 gets really loud overclocked and my EVGA XC is silly loud overclocked.

Your R 2700k won't even utilize a 2080 ti at stock so you would have to go with a next gen Ryzen or go intel to get the full potential out of it. I know this because not even my i7 8700k could not do it at stock.

I expect to be grabbing a 3000 series top end when it comes out as a quick and easy upgrade so it'll be fine I suspect. :)

Though the cpu is almost never a bottleneck at settings and in games I play  so I'm not too concerned about bottlenecks happening, thats only gunna be a thing for games the outliers that have unreasonable cpu usage. ?

Bottlenecking was not an issue for me when I used a GTX 1080 ti. Even with a i7 6700k. I never tested with the 1080 tis in SLI since I was getting the frames I wanted at 3440 X 1440.

When I got the FTW3 Ultra 2080 ti I did the usual tests and I could not get it to go over 77% on the power target. At first I thought it was defective, so I put it in my other gaming computer that uses a i7 8086k overclocked to 5ghz on all cores. The card ran at 124% on the same tests with that setup. I replaced my i7 8700k that could not go 5ghz and got another i7 8086k that could. The bottlenecks where at 1080p and 1440p and I play at 3840 X 1600/4k so the fix is for my next monitor(3840 X 1600 144hz).
