Why is Google pairing such weak SoCs with their flagship phones? Or is my comparison to the A11 Bionic still too unfair to the Pixel line?

Oh, so the 3a is supposed to be an mid range phone. That is VERY not clear from the naming.....

The whole Pixel 3 line (and Google product line in general) makes no sense at this point.

i'm still here with my Nexus 5x and it's till working fine, fuck higher screen to body ratios, it looks stupid and creates a aspect ratio that just creates more headaches for devs that have to support these as well as a normal aspect ratios.

Like it or not, they're not putting that genie back in the bottle.  Outside of that rumored iPhone 8 revamp (where they modernize its internals without doing much else), it may be tough to find a sub-5-inch phone from any major brand going forward.

 

I don't mind too much, since I see this as a reflection of how needs and expectations for phones have changed, but I know it's not going to be easy to adapt for some.

Display size doesn't really tell the story anymore. You need to look at the actual device measurements. A 5 inch display in a Galaxy S10 design would be absolutely tiny with no battery life. I'd say you're looking at least for a 5.5 inch display for it to be compared to previous small devices.

 

Edit: some sloppy math tells me that a 5.1 inch S10 would roughly match the size of a Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact which has a 4.6 inch display. However with the amount of extra hardware crammed into an S10 like extra cameras I'm doubtful about the battery size. It could end up lower than 2500 mAh but I don't know of a way to account for internal design.

One would think you hate glass backs because they're fragile, or collect fingerprints. A skin would largely solve those issues.

I guess, depends how you look at it. I still get a decent return when I sell my phone, so the cost differential is really nothing. The 3a is basically what the 5x cost when it was released, but comes with 4x the storage and twice the RAM.

Maybe because I don't buy higher end, the residual value of the phone when it comes to replacement is generally not enough for me to even bother with. I also like to keep my previous phone for a while, until I'm 100% sure I have everything on the new phone.

 

Ram is one of the things that I felt was limiting the 5X towards the end of my use of it. Even budget phones have more than it now.
