BOINC Pentathlon 2019

Go to solution Solved by jakkuh_t,

Seems like the easiest way for most people to help out is in the Marathon.

This involves downloading BOINC, selecting the "World Community Grid" project, and then selecting the sub-project "OpenZIKA".

1. Download + Install BOINC (https://boinc.berkeley.edu/download.php

2. Open BOINC and click "Add Project"

3. Select the "World Community Grid" project, and then click on their website url. (https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/discover.action)

4. On their Website, click "Join Now" at the top left or right depending. Enter your information and Register.

5. Once presented with the Sub project selection, choose "OpenZIKA" and click next. It will download a program, but you don't need it.

6. Go back to the BOINC app and click "Next >". Login with the World Community Grid account that you just signed up for.

Your BOINC app will now benchmark your system, and then start running.

BUT, you still need to set your team to the LTT forum one.

7. Navigate to the team selection page, and login if you aren't already (https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/ms/team/viewMyTeam.do)

8. Type in "LinusTechTips" in the "Contains:" field.

9. Click on the "LinusTechTips_Team" result that shows up. Once the page loads click "Join Team".

You will now be BOINCing for the LTT team :D

This is the easiest way to help out the cause, but there are more beneficial / advanced ways to do so if you're interested. Refer to the OP for more information.

How old is your BOINC install? That'd be about the only thing I can think of to cause that.

It's not the boinc install, it was when I first joined the project. The system it is on was built around 2015 so presumably they changed project URLs since then. Anyway, got the running systems all going on LHC now. Their webpage says they'll focus on issuing sixtrack units for the pentathlon. I'll see how temps are tomorrow, could ramp up more now we're back on CPU projects. Still letting my house cool down from the GPUs...

So we are suppose to be focusing on Sixtrack jobs. That's good.

A quick look at the Intel .PDF for that series board doesn't say that either interface is dedicated IPMI so either should get the job done. What OS did you put on it?

Got it. It turns out Ubuntu kept my old network settings (no one line update option apparently), but I got it all fixed.

New issue, no internet connection wtf...  Better yet, can ping google... But can't do jack all with BOINC.

Solved, 24 tasks not in progress :D

My normal power output is usually around 350 watts, just jumped 220 watts ? In the name of science!

Strange, my systems are still getting work. On that note, the units are a bit weird. Some complete in seconds, others are running for 20 minutes+ so far. They're not validating yet so I've no idea if they're good or not.

Also to test it out, I just added another system I wasn't going to run... attached no problem.

Maybe I'm blacklisted or something. Earlier this morning I noticed it was having trouble giving out enough jobs to my systems, I do have a lot on a single account.

Depends on the boinc project settings. They may limit units per host, user or whatever. Especially if there are short units mixed in that could cause pain. I hate to imagine the load on their server if people bunker the tiny units.

This is for a second instance on the same server, normally it actually says you have too many but I get that we the project has actually been added and asking for more. I just resumed WCG on it, don't actually need the second instance anyway since it's just to bunker more and 40 mins isn't worth the hassle now.

I couldn't reconnect for more work or else I'd lose what I bunkered. Moved to running WCG in a VM. Though I suppose I could have done LHC just as easily.

If anything you'd think that'd make them happy. I don't see a reason to block someone who has access to so many resources.

That just makes me happy to know that the couple second jobs aren't just some sort of broken file with no value. It's just a really tiny job.

Think about it from a work database viewpoint. I don't know how far you can bunker, but a large number of outstanding units is likely to cause some stress, if not on the server, then on whoever is running it! Projects with units in the hours are far less likely to encounter problems. If there's a large number of units that takes seconds, that could grow unit numbers fast.

I haven't looked into what the project is actually doing beyond simulating something or other. Maybe it can tell early on in the run if the results are going to be so far out of expectations it isn't worth going longer so quits. I hope credit is related to runtime or useful work done in some way...

Should i worry about this for my server? My AMD one is sitting at under 40C My quad core is sitting about 60C. And yes I have decent airflow, 2 2K fans and 2 80mm fans from arctic. (used arctics Silver 5 on the CPU's)

The way I see it they aught to be able to handle a guy with a few dozen servers all on one account. Usually when handling this much data Databases will operate the front-end with solid-state for rapid ingest and the back-end with mechanical storage. Of course maybe that's not how LHC@Home does it in which case maybe they need to throttle everybody.

Ya hear that leadeater? Maybe you'll have to cheat. Make a second account and split the load across the two. I have to assume where you work has more than one public IP so that should help confuse their servers so they don't block the second account.

Well this is a stupid competition IMHO. Just finishing Einstein on my GPUs and over 1/2 the WUs submitted are still "pending" and haven't been validated yet. Most of those have been submitted for at least 24 hours so their double validation is obviously broken in general or specifically due to the volume from the competition and people bunkering.

Luckily the BOINC software was designed intelligently enough to compensate for that so we don't have to worry.

Unless you meant LHC's servers in which case, we're screwed if they lose the cache.
