Turbotax NY refund

oskar23

Does anyone have any idea why am I being asked about  my residency in Yonkers where I have never been or lived in? It gives tells me that i was full time resident in new york city but why there is yonkers mentioned and if i made any money over there? I was doing taxes with turbotax last year and was smooth. Is there  possibility  that my SSN was stolen and thats why i have weird information shown?

If you live/work in Yonkers, you get taxed differently. They ask that question to everybody.

If you look at the IT-2014 (2018) form, they ask you if you've lived in Yonkers. It also came with this advisory:

Quote

If you do not file Form IT-2104, your employer may use the same number of allowances you claimed on federal Form W-4. Due to differences in tax law , this may result in the wrong amount of tax withheld for New York State, New York City, and Yonkers.

Can vouch for having been asked the question while a New York (central state) resident. No stolen SSN on your part.

Hah never understood that logic. Either way you have to pay it.

I got a nice $3,700 return this year.

I guess the way I see it, I need to pay it no matter what by April 15th. If something comes up before then and I need the money in a pinch, I can pay it. But if I already paid the IRS I don't have the cash. There is no benefit to paying early, so why bother?

On the flip side, you gave the government a $3,700 interest free loan :P

The only benefit I see to paying at the last minute is you can appeal to the IRS for paying taxes in installments if something comes up whereas you probably can't appeal to anyone else (you can try, but the IRS is more likely to do it). Otherwise I don't see any benefit in paying later either if you're financially stable and have no issues.

Just to get it out of the way...wouldn't you have $600 to cover that expense regardless?

Some of us are not as responsible as others with our money and choose to spend it all on computer components you don't need instead of important things, like rent and taxes. /r/buildapcsales is why I'm broke.

I believe you (or your employer) does actually have some control over that.

The way I understand it, you can have them take more or less out in taxes depending on your preference, and the gov't calculates what you actually owe at the end of the year. In a perfect world we'd all not owe or get a return on any taxes since we'd only pay exactly what we needed to.

Also as a New Yorker  filing with TurboTax I've gotten that question every year since I think 2014 or 2015.

Yeah, but I'd rather not have to estimate how much money I need to put away...if anything I'd get them to take more tax, and get a larger refund at the end of the year.
