Is it worth replacing thermal paste right away?

Go to solution Solved by TH3R34P3R,

I would only do it if the thermals hold the laptop back. there is no reason to mess with a brand new machine if there is no throttling.

I've got a new laptop coming next month from dell. Is it worth cracking it open and replacing the pads and grease? I have some kryonaut and minus 8 pads laying around from an old project.

Should I wait a year or should I just get on with it?

You can probably wait 5-10 years or never, paste just doesn't go bad at a set point.  It's not meant to be a consumer wear item, like oil in a car.

out of all the Thermal paste(s) I've used before, Kryonaut was the best. Starts out really good with lower temps but after 3-4 days I started noticing the temps rise slowly until I reached a point where the laptop was thermal throttling so I removed it.

For non metal, I suggest IC Diamond and for metal I suggest Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut or Coolaboratory Liquid Ultra but if you're planning on moving the laptop a lot, then you wanna ensure to properly seal the liquid metal by using nail polish around the die to prevent leakage.

See these posts about how bad Kryonaut is:

Now to answer your question, I'd use the laptop first and see the temps during gaming or whatever tasks you may want to do before wasting time on repasting.

Kryonaut doesn't work well with bad heatsinks (that's why I bought Mastergel Maker Nano, 4.5g vs 1g for about the same price)

Kryonaut and nt-h1 dont do well in low mounting pressure. They pump out very quickly.

How do you like the master gel? It's in my list but haven't tried it yet.

Ic diamond is very good for longevity and ceramique is as well. Ceramique often gets looked over, but it performs well and lasts forever.

~15C drop compared to stock paste. First impression definitely not bad. Performance only slightly behind Kryonaut if I'm not mistaken

Quite easy to apply, slightly stickier than Kryonaut

It can also pump out, but slower
