144fps+ w/ 2080 and 8700k at 1440p?

Hello,

I'm building my first pc and I bought a RTX 2080 and a I7 8700k (delid) that I will overclock.

I'm so undecided on which 144Hz monitor to buy. 27 in 1440p vs 24 in 1080p.

My question is: will I be able to hit 144fps plus on most games at 1440p to consider spending the extra money on a 1440p monitor?

I mainly play fps games, lately a lot of Apex Legends and I always go back to Csgo and Pubg.

I value fps more than graphics of course.

I have a 2080 ti, and as long as you lower settings you should have no problems hitting 144hz, both in 1440p or 1080p, especially in Esports titles

You'll easily hit 144 in games like csgo or other esports games at pretty much any resolution if you have an 8700k

Yup refer to this video:

If you're cool with adjusting your graphical settings accordingly and considering you'll be rocking an i7 8700K at 5ghz at least, you can actually play about any game with 144fps.

the RTX 2080 is still tied up with the GTX 1080 Ti as the 2nd best gaming card in the world.

I agree with this. Most of the time you want to lowermost settings anyway as an advantage in FPS and in spotting enemies (i.e. Motion Blur/Shadows)

probably not those games without lowering the settings more.

Apex is new and unoptimized, pubg is hard to run, and battlefield is hard to run.

Yes of course, will I comfortably hit 144pfs+ at 1440p though?

I get 90+ with the settings absolutely pushed to the max in apex, so im sure if you turn down aa/shadows/textures a couple notches down.

As far as CS;GO goes, you should have no problem on any settings hitting over 144+ fps.

Pubg, i'm not sure if its gotten any better but i have not been able to get the game to run smoothly over 100fps, generally turning down settings results with minimal improvements, and i thought this was because i had a bad bottleneck (i5 7500) but when i upgraded to a 2700x, i didn't get much more.

That's my main concern and why I'm not sure if I want to get a 1440p or 1080p monitor since my csgo res is 1920 x 1080 as well and 1440 doesn't scale well to 1080p

Csgo I'd probably hit 400 fps lol, my problem is the other triple a fps games

For stuff like battlefield 1, I get over 100 most of the time, With no drops under 70, With a 980ti/6700k at max, So you should have absolutly no problem getting over 100 fps at max settings, 1440p. Drop a few, Shadows, Ect, You can easily lock a 144.

i get 90 in BFV on high settings with RTX on low. so i'd expect 75, idk what its like with RTX off, because i literally only downloaded it to use it as an RTX demo

I have these exact specs and a 1440p monitor, If I play everything maxed out on apex I get between 100-120fps if I turn down a few settings I get a steady 144fps. Pubg is the same, CSGO will run on a toaster itll be fine. I would recommend 1440p 27inch

depends on how big the monitor is, it's about ppi, not resolution. Generally all the 144hz monitors look the same unless you pay for wide gamut, if a 1080p monitor has the same ppi as a 1440p, i'd personally choose the 1080p monitor as it needs less gpu horsepower.

Thank you, this was the reply I was looking for. I know I'll hit 400 fps on csgo, the problem is that 1920x1080 (my in game res) will scale bad at 1440p.

Isn't 24in better for fps games compared to 27in? I read that it's a little bit too big

So what is the purpose of a 2080 if his resolution is a decade old resolution of 1080p for gaming.  Also you can use DSR and get 2k display 1440p or somewhere around that resolution.  So honestly buy the 1080p then your nVidia DSR and raise your resolution to your liking.  Note this is only meant for gaming not desktop.  I don't understand how you can buy a 2080 and run it at 1080p.  Man first thing I do is go to nvpanel after a driver install and turn on every freakin thing there is and turn on all AA methods , high quality AF, all the jazz supersampling etc.  In game graphics on AAA set to max or ultra.  I get avg 140fps.  Why would you spend all that money and lower game settings ?  You know with a 2080 all nv panel settings and AA methods are free.  In game settings to ultra is almost free,, maybe you will get 10fps more with lowered game settings.  Right now I play with the Fast option for vsync since I have a 60hz monitor.  It locks it at 120fps and there are very few dips to low triple digits.  So Im going for a 120hz monitor, alto my fps does pass 144fps, its not all the time.  It jumps to 180fps then to 160fps worst case in Quake Champions I get 115fps in hardcore situations,, then back up it goes,, so for me a 120hz monitor is what I need.  If I wanted to buy a 2080 ajnd play at 1080p I would have stuck with my 1060 6GB … sighs

i guess 1440p isn't nearly as 4k, and so far it's just ubisoft games but a 2080 will run 1440p/100fps on high on odyssey/division 2, but who knows in the future, 1440p/144hz is pushing it even for a 2080 ti, unless it's lowered to medium (medium looks like complete crap compared to high so i'm doing high 100hz), whereas u can run high/ultra no problem on 1080p/144, it's still a trade off atm.

If you can afford the 1440p 144hz monitor get it!  It was absolutely the best decision I made when I was upgrading parts.  The added pixel density and smoothness from the higher refresh rate make my 24" 1080p monitor look like a 720p monitor.

You'll have no problem driving 1440 at 144hz with a 2080
