New 4770k CPU at 77C / 170F in Bios!

Tracy

My new build has been having some problems.

Just yesterday when I turned it on for the first time there was a loud bang and flash from the case. I didn't see where from exactly. Then It wouldn't power on. I left it alone for a day and came back to it. When I turn it on everything powers on for about 5 seconds and then shuts itself off and turns itself on a few seconds later but it stays on after this.

It booted into the bios today (didn't last night) and said there was a cpu fan error. My motherboard has 2 cpu fan headers so I unplugged the fan cable and put it in the other one. After that the message about the cpu fan error went away. I checked the temperatures in the bios and the cpu was highlighted in red and was showing it at 77C / 170F.

Any Ideas on what I should do?

is the cooler properly seated on the cpu?

did you forget to take of the little plastic on the cooler? (it happens)

did you use thermal paste?

What little plastic are you referring to? After placing the cooler on the cpu and lifted it up quickly and saw a very little bit of the thermal paste on the cpu so I don't think there was any plastic between the two if that's what you mean.

Check that the fan on the CPU heatsink is still running when you turn the PC on.

Ya it's on. So are the other fans in the case.

I have similar specs and when I first booted my pc I heard a bang and a flash aswell. It scared me to death but It booted after that.

Is there any odd electric smell from inside the case? The PSU could have blown a cap or two

Oddly enough there was no smell. I took the mobo out of the case and as i tipped the board a small piece of broken plastic came out from under the mobo's front shield. I'm leaning towards the mobo being the problem but. Does a cpu that's too hot even have to do with the mobo though? T the he fan picks up speed as the temp increases after booting so It's not like the fan doesn't increase in speed. Might it be the CPU?

O_o loud bangs and flashes are never good.  None the less I'd reapply and remount the CPU heat sink before trying anything else.  Finding what exploded is always a good option too.
