What GPU should I pair with a i7 8700?

RAM555789
Go to solution Solved by Zeitec,

Anything you want. i7 8700 can keep up with any GPU on the market except for maybe 2080ti at 1080p (but who is spending $1200 on a GPU to play at 1080p?)

As for what your upgrade path should be, it really depends on what you're doing.

If you're wanting 1080p 60hz, I'd go RX580, 1070, or Vega 56. RX 580 will do 1080p 60fps right now and for the next year or two at high detail settings pretty well. 1070/Vega 56 will let you crank it up to ultra now and play at high for the next 2-3 (maybe 4 in some games) years.

If you're wanting 1440p 60hz or 1080p 144hz, I'd go with a 2060, 1080, Vega 64 or 2080. Skip Vega VII but 1080ti can be a decent card if it's ~10% cheaper than 2080. 2060,1080 and Vega 64 are all suitable for 1440p 60fps or 1080p 144hz gaming at high detail settings for now and the next ~2 years. 2080 is suitable for those resolutions and refresh rates at ultra settings for the next year or two, and high settings another year or two after that.

If you're wanting 4k, I'd go with a 2080 if I were on a budget, and 2080ti if I have a lot of money. 2080 will do 4k high settings reasonably well, and will probably last another year or two at that resolution and those settings. 2080ti will do ultra in some games now (not all), and run high settings for the next 2-3 years. 4k is very demanding.

Currently I have an i5 8400 and will be upgrading to an i7 8700 (not getting it unlocked because my VRMs are not that great), however after looking over it and asking for some advice I was told I should look into upgrading my GPU (currently a 1050 TI). I'm trying to decide what GPU I should upgrade to and if it will be better to go for a 10 series or a 20 series and which one specifically. I'm hoping to get the best price to performance out of the i7 8700 once I upgrade too it, and plan to use that for a couple of years till it really starts to show some age and I have money saved up to eventually get a hard tubed water cooled setup.

Edit: I forgot to mention I currently am playing at 1080p and may decide to upgrade to a 1440p or higher refresh rate monitor in the future.

Buy any card you want. With 8th gen i7 all of them will be good. 8700 is powerful enough.

It's tax season and I'm getting a refund so its not super important the cost, however I would prefer the best price to performance I will get between the GPU and the i7 8700. I'm don't want to pay extra for a GPU when I don't plan to revamp my system for a couple of years and by that time there will already be a whole new CPU and GPU lineup. For example it probably won't make much sense for me to pair the current top of the line GPU the RTX 2080 TI, I'm fairly certain I won't get full performance out of it. I also forgot to mention I play at 1080p with thoughts of moving to 1440p or getting a higher refresh rate 1080p monitor after I upgrade my CPU.

In that case, get a RTX 2080 or a 1080 Ti. Even a 2080 Ti if you have the budget for it.

The i7 8700 is a pretty powerful CPU, even though it doesn't have an unlocked multiplier.

An 8700 non K version is a POS CPU.  My 7 year old CPU beats it in Cpu Queen bench and keeps up with other tests.  Anyhow even though you wont be overclocking there won't be a bottleneck.  You can get any video card you want.

bang for buck i'd recommend a 2060 6gb, 2080/ti if you are gonna go 4k or 1440p/144, avoid the the 2070, bottlenecks for the 8700 does exist but they are very rare (select games at 144hz), wouldn't worry about it.

As I’m sticking with 1080p for now, hoping to upgrade to a 1080ti. Have a little head room with the 8700k right now.

i have my none-k 8700 with gtx1080. but with gsync/freesync. crank all the settings up if you want to go budget and never feel the dips if able to stay in 30-140fps range

IDK dude I use Gsync and I still definitely like to stay above 60fps on my 1440p 144hz monitor.

not knowing the budget im offering a relaxed solution thats easy on the wallet. as of right now a gtx1070 on Ebay is low ~200. even still with that card you can crank everything up and probably in the rage of 50fps.
