RX Vega 64 vs MSI 2070 Aero

Hello LTT! Currently I'm in the process of my new build and was wanting to get some opinions. I am between the Vega 64 and MSI 2070 Aero. My case of choice is the Phanteks Evolv Shift which is why I am going with a blower card. I like the Vega 64 as it is currently on sale for $399.99 and my main monitor is a Freesync 34in Ultrawide, but the downside is it is more power hungry and tends to run slightly hotter. The 2070 is $499.99 and from benchmarks I have seen it tends to have the upper hand depending on the game. I was wondering if people who had real world experience with both cards or one of them to weigh in and help me come to a decision on this...it be greatly appreciated!

uh, good luck cooling that with a air cooler. GN required a 280mm rad.

 

OP: get a 2070, for higher memory bandwidth, and performance in most games.

I couldn't recommend people to realistically remove the power limit on a Vega 64, as mentioned it won't work on stock cooling, and it will need a good PSU to make sure it gets enough power.

The Vega 64 actually has more bandwidth than the 2070. ~40GBs of it because GDDR6 still can't compete with HBM2.

I'd say you should get a v56 with a good cooler and save some money, it performs the same as v64 at the same clocks, so just undervolt and overclock and you'll have a great card here.

No, bypass power limits, use 500W of power, throw on a liquid cooler (bringing the price up to 2080 levels), and be behind by around 15%.

Until you look at 2080 frametimes jumping all over the place, or has that been fixed?

Last I checked, V64 with its stock power limit is more consistent.

Unfortunately bypassing the power limit on the Vega 64 is not do able for me. I wouldn’t be able to keep it cool as I am sticking with the stock cooler and the power consumption would be incredibly high on my SFX power supply.

Last I checked, V64 with its stock power limit is more consistent.

I mean I never heard anything about 2080 having really poor frametime results so IDK, but Vega 64 with it's stock power limit is like 35% slower than 2080 so even if that's true I doubt Vega 64 would have better .1% results than 2080.

That price, I'm assuming it's a founders edition V64.  Those usually have pretty bad thermals because of the blower style cooling.  I'd go with a Vega 56 with better cooling...actually that's exactly what I did do a few months back. haha.  The Vega 56 overclocks nicely, and so far, has handled every title I've thrown at it, with highest settings.

They are extremely hard to compare because AMD uses Stream processors while NVIDIA uses CUDA cores. Lets start out by pointing out the obvious. The memory. The boost clock for the RTX is 1,620 and the base clock is 1,410. The Vega has a boost clock of 1,546 and a base clock of 1,247. The RTX is better for memory speeds (MHz). But other than that it is hard to compare them unless we look at some benchmarks. I checked some benchmarks and the RTX 2070 out-preformed the AMD VEGA 64. In conclusion the RTX 2070 is better than the AMD VEGA 64. 

What I said is just a recommendation, do whatever you feel like you want to.
