Need to pick up another screen for 2nd rig - buy an existing 3440 x 1440 Gsync model or wait for CES?

Like the title says - I need to pick up another monitor since I have 2 capable rigs now, and figured I can move my existing Asus P348Q over to the 9900k rig, and get a new better screen for the HEDT.

 

Doing some research it looks like there is a slightly newer Alienware 34" ultrawide that can do 120Hz and all around is slightly better than the PG348Q but I'm not sure if I should pull the trigger on that one, or wait a few weeks to see if there's something better I should hold off for.

 

What would you guys recommend?

Bear in mind that just because something is shown/announced at CES it doesn't mean it will appear shortly for sale.

 

How long have we been waiting for the 200Hz curved 3440x1440p Quantum Dot HDR panels from ASUS?

There's no harm in waiting, especially this close.
That said, as @Lathlaer mentioned, it's rare that things are released immediately after the show. It happens on occasion, but it's unlikely.

It can take a very long time for something shown off at CES or a show alike to actually come to market, so I definitely wouldn't wait for that.

Besides that, it's the same as every other product, there's always something new and better around the corner and you could wait your entire life playing the waiting game.

Yeah it happens when it's about RGB PCIE cables but definitely not with monitors (at least not the cutting edge tech)

Yeah I remember seeing the phantex evolve x and I was super hyped about the case and wanted to buy one. Too bad it didnt come out until much later in the year.

If it is shown at CES it may take a year to come out.

 

Last year I was interested in the LG UltraGear 3440 X 1440 120hz monitor. It came out just before the holidays with a really high price tag. 

 

I run 2 rigs as well. The one with the RTX 2080 ti runs a 32" 4k monitor and the one with 2 GTX 1080 tis are on a older 34" 60hz 3440 X 1440 monitor.

 

The 3440 X 1440 needs an update. The one that interests me now is a 3840 X 1600 144hz monitor.

That screen looks amazing if it becomes real though. TBH I will stick with ultrawide 1440 for now because with all graphics settings maxed out in these newer games it's still somewhat difficult to maintain 100+ fps (I can barely do it in Witcher 3 now with these cards... pair of Titan Xp couldn't quite keep it above ~85 outdoors IIRC)

 

Thanks for the replies everyone - you make a good point. I'll probably just pick up the Alienware since I want to use both rigs regularly and tired of having an expensive box of speed doing nothing under my desk.

 

Work was slow today so I popped over to IKEA and picked up a great little $25 desk that will be perfectly adequate.

well poop, I got the new battlestation set up and there is only 30.25" for the monitor, but 34" ultrawide screens are about 32.5" in actual width. Even if I scoot the tower feet all the way to the edge there won't be more than 31" max. UGH.

Whatever you do, I'd wait.  I suspect AU Optronics has a thing to show us next week.  The Asus and Acer 4K/144 panels both dropped from $2K to $1800 recently.  That would indicate that something ... bigger ... is coming in the 4K/144 space.  It'll have a ripple effect on pricing, I suspect.

yeah I am going to keep my eye out for a new 34" 1440p ultrawide later this year - the Alienware one they have right now would only be an upgrade in the max refresh department (120Hz vs my Asus PG348Q's 100Hz), so I'm gonna wait for something that is a solid upgrade all around.

I hope they actually announce a release date for this thing at CES lol. I really want to get it.

Grab me one of those and that sick ass Asus Matrix card. Ooooo boy that'll be a nice setup.
