I still use 1080p, might go to 1440p sometime this year tho.

I remember that when the gtx 970 first launched, it was considered a decent 1440p card. I was considering going to 1440p, but that would mean giving up 60fps at ultra.

I'm glad I didn't, since the "3.5" gb really did limit it at anything higher than 1080p

Damn....

For those here using their rig primarily for gaming what monitor did you decide to go with ? & why?

Post links if you’d like !

If you play Racing games, FPS games, you need 144 hz+ so 4K 144hz would be the best option and 1440p 144hz second best option

For most other games, you don't really need 144 hz so 4k 60hz would be fine.

Considering gpu pricing and performance I went for 1440p 144hz and think it is the sweet spot for now. You can do well with a 1070 or 1080 and it doesn't cost you too much $.

144 FPS is easier to achieve at 1440p than 4K, so if anything 1440p is the better option.

This is part of why I have a 1440p monitor, by the way.

4k 60hz vs 1440p 60hz = 4k wins

4k 60hz vs 1440p 144hz = 1440p 144hz wins

The difference in image quality is noticeable, but not worth the difference in responsiveness

If you primarily play on game pad = 4k 60hz

If you primarily play on kb/m = 1440p 144hz

144hz is nice, but IMO is far less of a consideration when using a gamepad due to more limited camera movement.

A gamepad is a controller - Xbox controller, PS4 controller, etc

I use an old Asus ROG Swift and an old Samsung UHDTV. Because they are old, you cannot buy them anymore.

I've been playing at 4K for 4 years now.

I tried high refresh rate for a bit and it was okay.  I find GSYNC at 60 Hz to feel just as smooth, and running at a much higher resolution really does make games look sharp without relying on awful post processing AA to blur the image.  I've played competitive Overwatch, CSGO and lately lots of Black Ops 4 and I've never felt disadvantaged by 60 Hz.  I honestly think the meme that you NEED high refresh rate for these games is just clever marketing from the same folks who make these comparison images.

The last year or so I've had to use a custom resolution of 3072x1728 in some titles due to VRAM and framerate limitations in some titles.  It's still a significant step up from 2560x1440.  Gonna get my 2080 Ti next week though.

imo in terms of fidelity there's no question.  1440p is to 720p what 4k is to 1080p.  The question is how much you care about high refresh rate gaming.

1080p 144hz, it would double the cost of my rig to do 1440p 144hz.

Before buying my rig I did a lot of research and came to the conclusion I couldn’t afford 1440p without making too many compromises.

I am saving up for it but it’s a 2020 thing I think.

I currently use dual Dell UltraSharp U2715H 1440p displays, and have absolutely zero desire to move to anything higher. If we put aside the overly high cost of 4K and the lack of decent UI/UX layouts for programs and operating systems at 4K resolutions, I've come to find that 1440p is the sweet spot for productivity and fits my budget quite well.

1080p 144Hz

It's a better fit for my GTX 1060 6GB, especially since I play Forza Horizon 4 quite regularly, and in racing games, you need a reasonably high FPS that's also stable to have a good experience.

For that reason alone, if I had something like a GTX 1070 Ti, a 1440p 144Hz would be more likely.

In game there is not that much of a difference between 1440p and 4k.  The big difference is in the desktop where 4k blows away 1440p in real estate.  This is why I will never get a gaming monitor until their 4k and 40" and curved and IPS and HDR.  and 144hz.. thank you

Dude, Im giving my opinion.  Im not stating facts, Im stating what I experienced.  I apologize if I shouldn't have wrote this thread.  All Im saying is of course theres a difference going into 4k from 1440p ,,,,,,, but what Im saying is there is whole bigger differnce on desktop with 4k res.
