how do the number of devices work for a dual-boot system?

i want to buy Malwarebytes, but i want it on both macOS and Windows on the same Mac. do i need to buy it for 2 'devices' then? does it count each install as a device?

I believe that even though physically you are talking about only one physical device, each install would count separately.

Yes, each OS counts as a separate 'device'. Normally it'll look for the product ID and link that to your account.

 

I know of a couple programs that will look for unique hardware identifiers and link them to your account. These programs can be installed on multiple OS's on the same machine.

I don't know if malwarebytes does this. I highly doubt it though.

well I did an oopsie... I bought it for one device because I wasn't sure yet and didn't want to waste my money... I thought I could add a device later if I needed to but I don't see an easy way of doing that... oops.

Most companies will say the motherboard's ID counts as the device. OS and install location are not usually looked at, but this will depend on the company's definition of "device". I would simply call them up and ask what their policy is.
