I have been hit with Mace before. Was actually when I was younger at a protest. My eyes wouldn't stop watering, my nose wouldn't stop running, it burned where it contacted my skin and it made my throat itchy so I coughed a decent bit.

That being said the bear mace is MUCH weaker than what law enforcement uses or even what you can normally buy as a civilian.

Chemical burns would be very very very unlikely. Irritation yes, burns no. Yes, you would definitely be coughing your ass off in this stuff, but covering your face with say your shirt and getting to fresh air would solve that problem.

They said this can was punctured and not that it exploded. If it exploded that would be a cause of critical injury if shrapnel was present.

Things like asthma or an allergic reaction could cause issues. I think an allergic reaction would be the most serious. Then again any emergency response vehicle should have an epi-pen and/or a nebulizer.

I just think someone being in "critical" condition from this is highly unlikely.

Until you show me your medical certificate im just going to ignore everything else you say because quite frankly, you have no idea what your talking about.

you got hit for a second likely, and you could breathe normal air after that, aside from what what on you causing you to breathe a little more in. This filled the air. They probably couldn't get a mace free breath.
Imagine taking that mace and just huffing it.
And no, this is comparable. It's the same ingredient in lower concentration. The goal of bear mace is to shoot very far, and it comes in much bigger cans. That's why it filled the air and caused the whole building to need to be aired out. I don't think it's about skin irritation, I think it's seconds or minutes of breathing in nothing but the mace.

I am not a medical major. The best I have I can show is a First Responder Cert I got when I worked in physical labor years and years ago.

Also people are sent to the hospital when maced all the time for a few reasons. First it is protocol in most situations. Second a good deal of these people are hit with much more potent military grade mace. Either way if you are maced and the police are informed an ambulance will normally be sent as well. This is just procedure and doesn't mean it is THAT bad, it just means they do it as a way to prevent a lawsuit.

You know if these workers weren't ganging up on the robot it might not have been forced in to this action. I mean 54 people harassing one robot worker. IMO they got what they deserved... I just can't believe how many people think their behavior is by any means acceptable.

I cannot stress the important part isn't the potency, it's how airborne it became with a large can of it. I'd much rather be sprayed with bear mace, yes, but I wouldn't want to have a can explode on me. Now if I was asthmatic...

there are documented deaths of people in police custody from excessive pepper spray for this reason

https://www.ncjrs.gov/pdffiles1/nij/195739.pdf

edit

I read now that the critical person is breathing through a tube. It may be allergic or something causing their airways to close.

It's all self defense really. What better weapon for a robot with no lungs to use?

i'm trying to understand how this is tech news?

workplace accidents always happen with robots and automation

anything combustible or holding high pressurized items shouldnt be near these in first place

or just a lack of policy?

duh shit is going to happen eventually, odds keep racking up after awhile of not having safety provisions in

"Amazon's automated robots put humans in life-threatening danger today, the effects of which could be catastrophic and the long-term effects for 80 plus workers are unknown," union president Stuart Appelbaum said in a statement. "The richest company in the world cannot continue to be let off the hook for putting hard working people's lives at risk. Our union will not back down until Amazon is held accountable for these and so many more dangerous labor practices."

Like come on ever seen someone get blindsided by a forklift carrying metal parts?
Fuck I worked at a place on the first day they gave me the controls to like a 10 ton crane swinging on a cable. Supervision maybe, if the other guy I worked with in my room wasn't grabbing a bite from his lunch box.

Image result for 10 ton crane

was like this, but with a  table sized clamp at the bottom for me to move a metal table of stuff from a laser cutter, all in a confined space with said crane. So a free swinging 10x4 foot thing that I had to guide with my hands onto another metal surface, and remember not to lose fingers. No training. That place was really not that dangerous compared to some.

Oh and the controls were labeled North, west, east, south. That actually throws you when you move around- some places use colors and paint colors.

They have a shitty job and get shitty treatment, but it's not dangerous.

I think we should enlist a few hundred of these robots to roam the planet and look for people doing things like the tide pod challenge and promptly end them. This could just be the first step in cleaning up the worlds gene pool.

I think if I got shot non-fatally the fight or flight response would be strong... and I don't think I've ever been a flight type. So it would probably just piss me off.
