be quiet dark rock 4 vs dark rock pro 4 (8700k)

G4BRI0S0CC3R

hello guys

I would like to overclock my I7 8700k but I don't know which cooler should I get. I have never overclocked before so my first goal is a 4.7 Ghz all core oc and I would like to know if the smaller cooler is enough for that. (I don't want to use a noctua cooler because of the ugly fan since I have a tg case.)

Also if I use the bigger cooler will the ram have enough space?

I will use the kingston hyperx predator 3333mhz ddr4 ram.

I would personally go for the PRO, have you consider noctua? I found the installation on that much easier compare to be quiet dark rock's.

They changed the mounting system with the 4th iteration.

Would still rather use a bQuiet heatsink and fans.

Pretty much all those huge coolers have some type of memory clearance issues.

Like either completely blocking slot or installed heatsink blocking access to DIMM under it and needing moving fan higher up.

And Dark Rock Pro 4 is no exception.

It's simply the nature of those dual tower heatsinks.

Normal/single tower heatsinks can avoid those problems easily by using offset design, which BeQuiet failed to do:

https://www.hardocp.com/image/MTUyNTAzMzY4NG4wbDV6Nmh5bWlfMl8yMV9sLmpwZw==

For example Thermalright has offset heatsinks in Macho series which don't have that problem.

Though in 140mm fanned heatsinks there's still the issue of protruding to space of uppermost PCI-e slot.

Anyway overclocking is nowadays completely overhyped.

There's no sensible loose for actually significant for usage life performance boost unlike ten years ago. (30+% overclock while undervolted)

Instead power consumption/heat output just rises very easily and fast, leading fast to high temperatures with Intel using toothpaste under heatspreader instead of proper solder.

And while better cooler can keep CPU temperature under control for longer, heat energy warming up your room stays same.

Case? Pro will block 1st RAM slot and with your RAM its tight if stick fits under fins or not. If your case has space, you can lift fans so thats not issue. Or with non-pro move fan to other side.

The DR4 is enough but would probably block the first dimm slot with the fan at the front in pull. If the fan is re-positioned to the other side, it should be fine. It's usually a bit worse than having the fan at the front in pull though.

What case are you using? Are you adamant on going with these coolers or are you open to alternatives?

You could go for a nice noctua cooler. Those would get you a lot closer to 5 Ghz depending on your luck with the silicon lottery.

About having room for the cooler, most cases are measured using the Hyper 212 Evo which is also a really good cooler that could get you to 4.7 Ghz with a bit higher temps unless you go for the 2 fan config. (They also sell them in black). That's what I have in my non-water cooled build and I love it! If you are not sure about the size though and want to be sure, tell me what case you are getting and I can tell you which of these fit or don't fit.

Sorry, didn't see that you will use the r6 case, the max height for cpu coolers in that is 185 mm, as stated on their website. The hyper 212 evo will fit easily, along with the dark rock pro 4 and dark rock. I am not sure about noctua coolers but I am sure that the majority of them will fit.

Where are you shopping / located? Budget?

What are you looking for in a cooler besides performance?

I chose these coolers based up on the performance/noise/looks also because I want air cooling and I would not spend more money on a cpu cooler than what they cost so the limit is around 100usd. Tell me your suggestion.

Some good alternatives that clear the ram include:
