Music tastes and what does a genre have that appeals to you

I overheard a student talking about how he can't understand why people enjoy Rock music or hard rock. 

 

Me being myself I listen to a lot of SOAD and Pantera... It kinda just calms me down some how. But at the same time I like Jpop, jedm... Edm. And old and new rap. I like Japanese style music for a twist of flavor, and I grew up listening to rap. 

 

So what genres do you like to listen to and what about them do you enjoy?

My taste: pretty firmly a metalhead.

 

Appeals to me: I started to enjoy it because it had a lot of energy and aggression but not without melancholy and complexity. I grew up in the 80s and so did my aunts so by the late 80s I was a very bored kid and enjoyed listened to their LP records when bored: lots of Rock in Spanish but a few other records that caught my eye like Bon Jovi and eventually Guns and Roses.

 

Then I started listening to TV and radio on my own finding more of this type of music and got into first Metallica, then Cannibal Corpse, Morbid Angel, Brujeria, etc. Pretty much really into the Death Metal side right away during my formative teen years in the 90s. This is also when I started playing guitar and picked it up, took maybe 2 or 3 months of lessons but mostly for acoustic and once I got an electric became self taught at it.

 

Through the years I went through many subgenres and even things that are fully outside of the metal realm like Punk and Hardcore (I was even on a hardcore punk band for years) and particularly got really interested in the more melodic and melancholic sides of metal (Melodic Death Metal, Doom Metal, Heavy and Power Metal etc.) and later on took quite a liking to progressive music and black metal as well.

 

I just don't ever feel confined within my musical taste since most of the same metal acts have gone way off the genre and many of us older metalheads have dived into it right along with it. Even the newer kids with movements like Djent feel fresh and with interesting things to say musically so it's always a constantly renewing genre of music.

Synthwave fan. basically it's heavy use of synthesizers, but it's gotten pretty big so now there's subgenres like dreamwave/retrowave which have a more 80s nostalgia sound. or darkwave, which have a heavy metal or sinister sound. personally i like dreamwave

I started on synthwave but have slowly evolved to like more alternative electronic based music. Basically take a synthwave song rip out the harsh synth and snares and replace it with vocals.

Classical, mostly Baroque, Renaissance, and Classical/Romantic periods, in that order, 60's American folk and Easy listening, Bluegrass, Gospel (especially a cappella), some contemporary a cappella, and Irish, Scottish, and English folk music. Occasionally, some music from other genres.

Honestly, I don't know what does it for me when it comes to EDM. I just enjoy the sound. I also don't have a great understanding of all the subgenres, so I'll list artists instead.

 

Some artists I like (not an exhaustive list):
deadmau5 (progressive house)

Most artists on the Monstercat label (as plebian as that is to "purists", variety of genres).

Daft Punk (French house apparently)

Krakota + London Elektricity (drum and bass) (Hospital Records has different stuff from what I'm used to, and I like that)

 

As for more conventional music, I've loved Coldplay (alternative rock) (Ghost Stories and everything pre-Mylo Xyloto is great, their newer stuff is shit other than "All I Can Think About Is You") for my entire life and sometimes I have some mainstream music in my playlist (currently some Drake and Ariana Grande among others.) Laura Brehm makes really nice stuff outside of doing EDM vocals as well.

But in all seriousness, prog is my favorite genre, particularly progressive metal.  I consider progressive metal and progressive rock to be subgenres of prog, rather than the other way around.  I feel that it gives a writer a lot more space, and a lot fewer rules for creating an experience.  If listening to normal music is like watching a tv show or a youtube video, listening to prog is like watching a movie.  Between the Buried and Me is probably my favorite prog band, and Avenged Sevenfold (no bully plz) is probably my favorite non-prog band.  I've had a long history of loving classic rock, particularly Rainbow, Black Sabbath (Ozzy and Ronnie <3), Skid Row, DIO, Dick Dale, Slayer (If you can call them that these days), The Guess Who, etc...  I still enjoys most other genres, so long as they are creative enough.  The only types of music I either dislike or hate are mumble rap, hick rap (modern country), 90% of 80's and 90's pop, Stone Sour, System of a Down, The Police, modern Metallica, Nirvana, and John Lennon.

I listen to just about anything excluding rap, there are probably only a handful of rap songs I could actually enjoy.

 

Recently I've been relaxing to some classics like: 

I find that classical pieces tend to have some really nice soundscapes and can tell a story just by itself if you pay attention. I find listening to classical music pretty effective for keeping me focused while at work as well. 

 

But I also do enjoy some good metal: 

Though I do tend to have a preference of having no vocals in my music I don't mind if it actually melds into the melody well.

When I was younger I would listen to pretty much everything that was loud, fast, abrasive or generally disliked by the larger public.

It could be death metal, techno, noise or hip-hop. As long as I was someone's moral problem I was good. 

 

As I've gotten older I'd like to think I've aquired an appreciation for all music genre. 

Depending on my mood I'll listent to everything from bluegrass to pop to black metal. 

 

I guess a pretty big common thread in everything I like is that most of it is either dark or experimental. 

Cookie-cutter, up-beat music is all well and good, but I tend to be drawn to the music that's played in a minor key, is drenched in reverb or has dark lyrical content. 

 

Honestly, we're all a part of the MP3 generation. Almost every song ever created is at our finger tips, so there's really no excuse for not going out and experiencing new genres of music. 

There's usually always something to like.

Rock/metal here. I like stuff that's heavy, but not like screamy stuff. King's X - Dogman or Galactic Cowboys - If I Were A Killer are two examples I like to use (Seriously, if you haven't heard Dogman, like the whole album, then you're really missing out on something amazing). I have trouble finding much that really hits that spot for me. Otherwise I like some more classic stuff like Black Sabbath or Hendrix Experience.

 

Basically a checklist for music I really like:

1. Crunchy guitars

2. Heavy bass tones

3. Good lyrics

4. Great vocals (Two or three piece for extra points, or in Galactic Cowboy's case, FOUR FUCKIN PIECE!!! SERIOUSLY, LISTEN TO YOU MAKE ME SMILE!!)

 

I'm really picky, it's taken me years just to find the two or three bands I truly love.

I'm a metalhead through and through. However I do appreciate some electronic music here and there, especially downtempo or other relaxing subgenres. Atmospheric metal or progressive metal are my top tier picks. Anything that invokes emotive feelings or immerses the senses.

 

Genres I absolutely cannot stand are Country, Hip Hop/Rap, and Gospel. I'm more or less ambivalent towards genres such as pop, mainstream rock, etc.

Other examples of favored metal genres are symphonic black metal, melodic death metal, doom metal, goth metal, and metalcore (screamo less so). 

 

If a band primarily uses atmospheric, emotive, or heavy themes in their music and lyrics, they are my top tier picks.

Personally, my music tastes could be best described as rock, metal (from classical heavy metal like Iron Maiden to modern metal bands like Architects to Children of Bodom) and Eminem. 

Sometimes I do listen to classical or blues rock, but that depends on the mood, it's not something I would call go to choice.

 

And let me be honest here - I sincerely believe that music like this takes more brain power to digest than something like EDM/modern pop, hence why popularity of it is down these days.

My personal tastes are mainly in the Melodic EDM scene. To me its just simple and easy to digest. Specifically my favorite artist in the genre is The Tech Thieves, prime example of what I love the most of Melodic EDM.  Plus from what ive found from experience the mainstream doesn't take too harshly to melodic EDM. Im also into the lofi-hip hop range mainly with Joji (Yes that guy xD RIP Pink Guy), Its more than likely not the best artist but certainly respectable imo and I personally love it. So basicly Melodic EDM and Lofi FTW xD

I suppose you have something to back up that belief?

Becuase the numbers aren't really in your favour. 

Rock (and all it's various subgenres) were the leading genre in album sales in both 2016 and 2017.

Even if the popularity of rock music is dwindling I don't see any evidence that should lead us to assume it's due to mental deficiencies in the general population or a lack of appreciation of complex music. 

If we accept IQ as a measurement of intelligence then the trend is quite clear. Each new generation is smarter than the previous one. So, there's not really anything that suggest that today's youth is mentally incapable of handling the metally taxing genre of rock.

This is, of course, accepting the premis of rock music actually being more mentally challenging than more contemporary genres of music, which I don't really see any reason to assume.

 

Also, just assuming that the supposed lack of support of rock music is down to how hard is to mentally process negates various other factors. All of which, I would argue, are more reasonable assumptions. Call it an application of Occam's Razor if you will.

Rock music could simply have disappeared up its own ass, trying desperatly to capture the sound of some ill defined "golden age" and thereby lacking in any kind of innovation or progress. See Greta van Fleet, Foxy Shamzam or the Pretty Reckless for examples.

This could also lead to the sound trend simply changing. The general taste of the public tend to change. There's a reason we aren't listening to the Sugarhill Gang, Frankie Avalon and Cinderella anymore. They were all a product of their time and have luckily been left behind when they were no longer needed. 

 

Music trends also tend to be dicated by the zeitgeist and by what predates the trend. 

It's easy to, for example, see the grunge movement of the 1990's as a counterreaction to the excess and decadence of the popular music of the 1980's, which itself can be seen as an escapist way of handling the unstable world order at the time and as a reaction to the more earthy, personal and political music of the ´60's and ´70's.

Today's music could easily be seen in this way as well, although, we'll need another 10-15 year before being able to properly analyze the context. 

 

It could also be that rock music is simply no longer economical for lables to create and promote. 

Why would a lable pay out royalties to a five-piece rock band when they could just pay out to one rapper and perhaps a couple of producers?

I'll elaborate more later when I'm home.  Metal is my all time favourite genre.  I love thrashy, chugging guitar riffs, pouding double kick drums, anything aggressive and heavy.

 

My current metal obsession is Fleshgod Apocalypse.
