Would adding an ssd speed up this computer?

mattdmg

So I have an old computer with a Q6600 and 3gb of ram running Windows 10 and I am wondering if adding an ssd for the boot drive would speed the computer up significantly or if it’s just too old and won’t do much.

Obviously adding an SSD would make things faster but it's always going to be slow because the hardware is just so old.

It will. A quad core q6600 isn't that old

It would definitely shorten boot times and some loading times of programs installed on there. The best way to upgrade this rig would probably be extra ram, and then an SSD. Something like an older 840 EVO would suit this nicely.

add ram, ssd. if you just want to use this as a home pc for light browsing and media 8gb of ddr3 and a simple 128gb ssd for the OS will work great.

Why would more ram help?

Putting money into a 12 year old platform is pointless and silly when you could go on Ebay and buy a full pre-built that has an i5 2500 for $90 (USD).

He asked about upgrading, so you recommend upgrades. Answer the question at hand, and then make a suggestion about other options. In other news, yes, I agree with you that there are better options that upgrading in this case, but no cheap prebuilt from that time will have an SSD, probably just a 5400 rpm HDD and will still be extremely sluggish. By the time you add an SSD, you're out another $50 (for a 120GB  SSD) or more and by the time you give it more than 4GB of RAM, you're one again out $50.

I have Spotify, Steam, and 2 tabs open on Chrome and those alone are using 1.5 GB of RAM. 3GB of RAM just isn't enough.

If he uses DDR3 (Some 775 motherboards use DDR3), he can always use it when he upgrades to something newer, like a core i5 2500. I wouldn't really buy a new system with DDR4 with this prices.

Will I be able to find a system at that price with an ssd though?

A SSD can speed up your computer in several ways:

  • Boot times will be significantly reduced.
  • Launching applications will occur in a near-instant.
  • Saving and opening documents won't lag.
  • File copying and duplication speeds will improve.
  • Overall, your system will feel much snappier.

My OptiPlex 755 has a Core 2 Quad with an SSD. It's not bad to invest in the better side of the LGA 775 socket as far as upgrades go. A Core 2 Quad will be more than enough for me and a lot of other users for a long time.

Main System: Phobos

AMD Ryzen 7 2700 (8C/16T), ASRock B450 Steel Legend, 16GB G.SKILL Aegis DDR4 3000MHz, AMD Radeon RX 570 4GB (XFX), 960GB Crucial M500, 2TB Seagate BarraCuda, Windows 10 Pro for Workstations/macOS Catalina

Secondary System: York

Intel Core i7-2600 (4C/8T), ASUS P8Z68-V/GEN3, 16GB GEIL Enhance Corsa DDR3 1600MHz, Zotac GeForce GTX 550 Ti 1GB, 240GB ADATA Ultimate SU650, Windows 10 Pro for Workstations

Older File Server: Yet to be named

Intel Pentium 4 HT (1C/2T), Intel D865GBF, 3GB DDR 400MHz, ATI Radeon HD 4650 1GB (HIS), 80GB WD Caviar, 320GB Hitachi Deskstar, Windows XP Pro SP3, Windows Server 2003 R2

OP, while there still might be some life left in that pc.. i would recommend considering something like the following..

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Dell-Optiplex-7010-DT-Desktop-Core-i5-3470-3-20GHz-8GB-Ram-250GB-HDD-Win-7-Pro/173152963015?hash=item2850b889c7:g:EgIAAOSwkrFafz03

If you offered tat guy $150 instead of the 168 buyout I am 90% sure he would accept.

So for 150 you would get

A quad core 3rd gen i5

8 gb of ddr 3 ram

a 250gb HD.

There are some much cheaper than this one or with a 1tb HD or even SSD/s

However, you could pick up a cheap 240gb ssd for 50 bucks and toss that in this machine and it would be good for most uses. Want more storage? another 50 bucks can get you a 1-2tb 7200 rpm drive.

So if for example you decide on all 3 things..  $250 would get you a machine that would be around twice as fast clock for clock as what you currently have. You also get more ram, a free copy of windows 7, 2.5tb of storage, and it will use less power and run cooler than what you have.

If you want to do some gaming on it you could always pick up a 1050 ti SFF and a new PSU. Or you could get a full tower variant and toss any any gpu you wanted.

In the end I think if you are looking to upgrade this would be the best path to take from a budget stand point/

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Dell-Optiplex-7010-SFF-Intel-Quad-Core-3-20Ghz-8Gb-Ram-500Gb-Hdd-Windows-10/122973565864?epid=8014905934&hash=item1ca1cbb3a8:g:5dYAAOSweLBaX4zI

Here is one that is buy it now for 139.99$

It has 8 gb of ddr 3 ram

a 3rd gen i5

500gb hard drive

copy of windows 10.

This is an even better deal than the other one. Toss a SSD for 50 in it for a total of 189.99 and you are up and running.

Just something to consider.
