Posted January 17, 2018 Do you prefer to buy things or make them yourself where possible?. Personally I am a DIY kind of guy. If you fall in the DIY department maybe post an image of something you made. I'm currently working on an Arduino based camera slider. Posted January 17, 2018 Why not both? To DIY, you would need to buy at some point. "May your frame rates be high and your temperatures low" I misread titles/posts way too often--correct me if I don't.
 Posted January 17, 2018 That depends what it is. Like, I'd rather buy a motorcycle helmet than try to make one. But then, for things like shooting targets, I'll make my own. There's plenty of things I use that I could make myself, but buying it will get me something better for not much more. I'll make things when I can make it and buying it is more expensive (because you still need to buy materials most of the time) for no practical benefit. Mostly it will be for things where buying it just improves form but not function.
 Fair point I categorise DIY as creating something in the spirit of doing it cheaper or possibly better than you can get retail. Yeah definitely would advice buying a helmet over making one however in many cases you can make something that is either of higher quality or cheaper than the real thing. For example I'm currently making a stop shoot stop camera slider because it's far cheaper than any one I've seen on the market and it does the same thing There are 10 types of people in the world: those who understand binary numbers and those who don’t bulgara, oh nono Multipass
 Posted January 17, 2018 OP, do you mean in the sense of buying an old dual socket server, making a case for it out of wood or pieces from old cases, fix the loud cooling for something quiter and throw a used gpu in that and BOOM you have a cheap gaming pc? is that DIY in your view? because you are still buying all the parts for a project like that... I guess that can be considered DIY technically putting together your rig out of old or new parts is still DIY because you are doing all the assembly yourself rather than paying a company a premium for them to do it. I think the Buy category would only encompass buying a complete package deal for a premium instead of doing the work yourself to save money. Posted January 18, 2018 If it's something that takes more than 2 hours to do myself, I just buy. If things just aren't working out and I start raging out, I just buy. If I don't have the tools, I just buy. If I feel like a lazy piece of sh*t, I just buy. Otherwise, I usually try to DIY, especially if it's something that just needs to be repaired and not made from scratch. Posted January 18, 2018 DIY is fun, it's a great learning tool! I fix all my phones (when it's fixable, like changing buttons, or screen), I try to fix the hardware I have when possible. I fix my car, house, build stuff myself (I made the kitchen island we have right now). I also mod stuff when needed, like the CM Devastator 2 I have, the backlight is tied to the Scroll Lock button, but thing is, I use Excel, not everyday but often enough that this became a problem. So I modded the board so that the backlight would be tied to the num pad (that I always have on) ; If you need help with your forum account, please use the Forum Support form ! Posted January 18, 2018 I love making stuff. Useful like handles for hammers, axes, tools in general. Sure I could buy a cheap hammer but I rather rehandle old hammer head because I trust the older stuff more. Plus you can make the handle exactly how you like it. But there is also something nice about making decorative stuff like picture frames and such. Love PCs and gaming but there is something satisfying by making something with your hands. You asked for pictures so for example bottle lamp I made for fun for my uncles birthday. Bought the lamp shade at IKEA (where else really lol) Picture frame I made from some leftover wood and plexi. Bonus points if you know from where the poster is. My modded Air 540 build Spoiler
