Rant about Windows updates

For these last big updates every time windows comes up with an update something goes crazy in one of my PC's or both.  Anyone else?

 

This last time on the laptop Chrome doesn't open, and can't unistall either and on the desktop the Asus tweak and aura software went crazy and every time i restart the PC i have to accept  4 different user account control messages.

i have win10 but never have updated it, i have disabled all possible windows features etc from services.msc and im happy

When I frist updates my windows to 1709 version it was causing me stutter in all applications. Used restore point to go back and after 15 days I installed it again.

Works like a charm now and seems stable without any problems.

For the big updates the only gotcha to look out for is it will break nvidia GPU drivers. It might seem to work for some stuff, but not all. I always reinstall GPU driver after a major update and no problems after that. I don't have enough info to know if this affects AMD GPUs too.

Only major issue I had was it broke a virtual NIC for vmware on the anniversary update.

I had some performance issues after upgrading to 1709, but a factory reset fixed those for me. Running smoothly ever since. 

 

At work things are different though. A few of our customers use matrix printers still, and the latest monthly rollup broke the print queues for just the matrix printers. Not fun when you're dealing with industrial equipment relying on them for printing receipts and whatnot. Yay Windows Upfuck.

Give Linux a try. Don't have to deal with any of this forced updates annoyance. Only update when you want to.

I do want to state that usually Windows Update only breaks stuff on heavily bloatware'd systems... I do mean it, the cleanest the OS the harder it seems to cause issues... usually gets those computers with those "disguised malwares" like advanced system care by iobit that supposedly speed things up but only actually breaks stuff... gets the windows update and done all cracked up and then somehow it was Microsoft's fault...

 

Not saying this is a rule but I do believe from all I have experienced to today that's more common than not.

I wouldn't. My experience is 100% brick upon update with Linux, requiring a new install of the most up to date image.

 

Whereas a bad Windows update is easy to fix 9 times out of 10, either reinstall a driver or the update. OSX, the only issue I've had is that the fingerprint scanner gets false positives all the time.

Yep. Truthfully, the Windows install I have on my gaming rig is the same one I started with back in 2013 with Windows 8 (or 8.1, I can't remember now). All the major updates and upgrades (to 10 and now the creators updates) have always gone through without a single snag and everything has worked properly afterwards. I do always try to maintain a healthy OS (regular malware and virus scans every couple months, avoid sketchy websites and all that, run disk cleanup regularly, delete files/programs I don't use, basic de-cluttering) and you're totally right, it makes a big difference.  

 

My comment was more aimed at those people (who have become more vocal in recent times) who are getting tired of the "forced updates/upgrades" mentality and implementation by MS in Windows. Just letting them know that there is a very viable alternative that gives you more control over your OS.

What distro, what PC, and how long ago?  In my 4 years now of using Linux, I have never had an update brick any machine, and I've run Linux on quite a wide range of hardware.

How old is this Windows installation? Did you try reinstalling Chrome?

pretty recent on both systems. I had to remove a .dll and then i finally managed to uninstall chrome and reinstall it. The desktop i removed both asus programs and reinstall them. No problems now.

On last update on the laptop the desktop icons changed place every time i restarted windows, tried everything on the internet and gave up and went for a fresh windows install.

 

I have no bloatware or virus, or even excessive shit on my systems, in the desktop is games and  premiere cc EXCLUSIVELY.

Hmmm... That's really odd. Unfortunately I don't really have any suggestions. What is the make/model of laptop, just out of curiosity?

So, you're saying ALL those distros all bricked on ALL those systems with every update? I find that extremely difficult to believe.

Every OS and kernal update. Whereas it has never happened with Windows, and installing an updated version of the particular OS from an ISO always works. But I don't have the patience to fix it every time there is an update, so none of my personal machines that see anywhere close to frequent use have Linux, and the few machines that do, stay at the version they ship with until I install the next LTS.

That makes no sense at all. How were you going about performing the updates? Commands in the terminal ("sudo apt-get update" for example) or through the GUI or?

Yes.

The issue happens when the updates are actually being installed. The result is a corrupted mess that boots once, crashes, and then locks me into a perpetual loop where I have to remove the drive and install an OS.

That's too bad because Linux is actually quite amazing. I'm sorry you've had such a bad experience with it. I've never heard of that many distros all failing after updates on that many different variants of HW. That is truly strange and I can tell you from my own and countless other people's experience; that is not a true representation of what it's like (or what it should be like) to use Linux. 

 

Something's clearly going wrong somehow. It should not fail across so many different instances. For one or two specific devices that may have some rare, unsupported piece of HW, maybe...

i also would like to know. I never passed the look it's nice let's get back to windows phase, because then we don't have this and that program we need.
