Yep. NH-D15S with a single 140mm fan (due to RAM), two 120mm NF-F12s in the front, one in the rear. At anything above 1.32v (which gets me to 4.4Ghz stable) it hits the mid-high 90s in Prime95.

Well.... I think I'm sticking with X99:

 

Performance PCs had the Radeon VII blocks for 20% off so I snagged one and a backplate (I know I don't technically need the backplate, but the stock backplate wouldn't match and that'd bother me), along with a smol rad and some more tubing and stuff. Will pull my Heatkiller IV block, EK pump/res combo, and 360GTS rad off my X58 rig. Have 4 iPPC NF-F12 fans for the rads, will pull random fans from my fan box for the front (putting the 120 on the rear exhaust between the GPU and CPU, then the 360 on the top). Probably gonna sell my 1660 Ti to get some mons back, have been using it for now since it runs cooler and quieter than the RVII, but that shouldn't be a problem anymore. Will need to pick up a cablemod kit for my RM1000i at some point just to finish out the look, and some 2.5" SSDs (have a couple HDDs that size from laptops to tide me over) since I have to remove most or all of the 3.5" bays for the pump and such.

Lol, the 1660 Ti was part of a trade, that + $200 monies for my 1080 Ti (I paid $550 for it a few months prior, and the 1660 Ti is a $300 card, and it was basically new so it added up to around $500, a fair price for the 1080 Ti). It's a solid GPU, I'm still only on 1080p144Hz so I don't actually notice a difference between that and my RVII. If I can get in-home streaming working with Assassin's Creed Odyssey and such I will though, then I can set up my 2200G rig in my Inwin Chopin and stream games at 4K on my TV with that. RVII is slightly better at 4K than the 1660 Ti, methinks.

You could just do what I did and set up Windows RDP, assuming you have Win10 Pro. Much easier and better than Steam In-Home Streaming in my opinion.

What's that? I am running 10 Pro on my main desktop, would I need to install it on my 2200G rig as well?

RDP = Remote Desktop Protocol. Every version of Windows can connect via Windows RDP, but only Pro, Enterprise, and Server will let you connect to them, if that makes sense.

 

Basically, you can just remote directly into your main rig and have all of its performance and capability at your disposal. This includes playing games

^^^ People still want $700 or so for them though . The 5960X is back to around $300-350 though, it had spiked up to $500-700 for a month or two and that's a yikes. For OC potential I'd prefer the 5960X, especially a J-bin, some hit 5 on water and I'm seeing a good few guys on forums getting 4.5 at 1.14v or so and 4.7 at 1.3. For reference my 5820K (lol, also a J-bin, IDK if that matters much on those chips) does 4.4 at 1.32v, and that's a 6 core instead of 8. For that biggboye core count the 6950X is top dog though. IIRC it matches/slightly beats X299's i9 7900X, loses slightly in multithreaded workloads. Funnily enough, those i9s go for around the same price though, so you could get an X299 setup for about the same cost and have better NVMe compatibility out of the box and such than most X99 motherboards. But you also get some very questionable TIM and I think even more heat from those chips.

X99 is still bae

I'll probably run my X99 rig into the ground, there's so much potential when starting on the lowest end chip and having the power and cooling to handle the higher end ones.

 

The tradeoff between 6950X and 7900X is really only "i9" vs "Extreme Edition"

Yeah, the only real advantage the 7900X has are ones X299 brings, but X99 can already do most of that. On-board NVMe support is better on X299, but a simple add-in card solves that for X99 (My X99 Classy has an NVMe slot but it's slower than it should be due to being pretty much 1st gen, so I run my 960 Evo off a PCIe add-in card). X299 does a couple things better than X99, but I'm not maxing out my USBs or PCIe lanes anyways so those aren't of much use:

I suspect the higher end CPUs will still hold value as they're the maximum people on the platform can upgrade to. The low end is dropping though. 5820k are almost given away, and I got a 5930k for not much more just for the extra lanes that I don't need.

 

I'm also keeping an eye on X299 CPUs for similar reasons, but that's probably for another thread...

In a few years, we'll probably see an X299 thread much like the X58 and X99 threads.

 

X299 is a good platform, but I don't see enough benefits of it for me personally to take it over X99.

I've been letting it since ~April  ...and jumped on the Z390 bandwagon...

(Apparently the ASUS X99 Deluxe II toasted the CPU...also been reports about it online?)

That was the main takeaway of the article by Puget Systems I pulled that chart from: https://www.pugetsystems.com/labs/articles/X299-vs-X99-What-is-the-Difference-979/

 

Basically X299 has more PCIe lanes for moar NVMe SSDs, and lets you use the newer CPUs. And yee, in a good few years the prices should have dropped, but that's assuming Intel and AMD keep putting out CPUs that are worth the cost to upgrade. If tech kind of slows down, games don't work their way up to using multiple cores, DDR5 isn't a good perf increase, etc, then people will have less and less of an incentive to upgrade. Zen 2 is tempting to me purely because I'm a hardware enthusiast, same reason X79 and a host of other platforms are. But from a performance and cost/benefit standpoint, I have no need for an upgrade in a good long while. I think a lot of people who got X299 are just quiet working people and they'll want a practical and beneficial upgrade. The ones who talk all the time about X299 are often enthusiasts who will always be chasing that next piece of hardware purely for the sake of messing with it. If there aren't enough people upgrading, the market won't really get saturated to the point that prices go down. For X99, X79, and X58, motherboards demand a higher price because of lack of supply, but due to the massive amount of Xeons sold for those sockets, CPUs are often cheap because any large business upgrading sends a flood of CPUs to the market.

Oof, I think some earlier X99 boards had issues. If Intel accepts your RMA and you can get a good mobo that should be awesome, though the 6000 series doesn't OC as well as the 5000 ones.

Like I said, it was paired with an ASUS X99 Deluxe II motherboard.

Mobo is back in the box since, but it's still in mint condition, and works.

I don't think you can go any higher without stepping into ROG / Aorus product range...plus, the white + metallic colour scheme is quite nice/clean.

(The current trend with the carbon-black + RGB is too...dark for me personally)

Oh, I'd assumed you'd want a replacement, if you suspect your mobo killed your CPU why would you want to put another one in it? 

 

It is defo very nice looking. I had an ASUS Prime Z370-A (the 1st gen one), it looked very similar, matched really well with my NH-D15S and EVGA 1080 SCs. My current mobo is the EVGA X99 Classified, it's just a plain black/grey board with red X99/Classy logos and then red and white lights for the various mobo indicators and such.
