J-bin 5960X here, caps at 4.8GHz all-core, 4.9 with HT off. Won't go above that even bench stable at the highest voltages that'd actually be dailyable (2.1v input voltage, 1.35v vCore). I currently run 4.7/3.7 core/ring, haven't had time to test dropping core and seeing if ring will go any higher.

You need the OC socket or Der8auer mod to increase your ring overclock to 4ghz+

I was told opposite. You want fastest core possible. But depending on the application, you might bottleneck if ring is too low. Ring is the interconnect between the cores. 

 

 

My chip is a dud, e5-1660 v3 L-binned. I am running 42 @ 1.28v core, 40 @ 1.25v uncore (ring)

Yeah, HWiNFO calls it uncore, and I'm used to what that does due to my experience with X58 (uncore OCing is just as important as core). I believe newer CPUs label it cache, OCers seem to call it all 3 interchangeably lol. Cache OCing still makes a good difference on the new CPUs too (mostly for 1% lows) and mesh OCing on X299 does a similar thing. 

Hmmmmmmm did check out that mod guide, seems quite interesting. IDK if I'd be brave enough to do that to my 5960X, will it also work on a 5820K? I assume it's the same for all the Haswell-E lads, and if I accidentally toasted my 5820K by doing something wrong, it wouldn't be the end of the world. Ofc I'll need to push the cache on the 5820K first to see how it does stock, my 5960X hits the 3.7Ghz wall the guide mentioned (3.8 = instant crashing, ofc the same for anything higher). 

 

I've seen tests on a 9900K that showed cache OCing can actually perform better than straight core clocks, would be interesting to see if that holds true on Haswell-E. Given that Intel hasn't really changed much about how the CPUs work OC-wise (they've been on ringbus how long now? And IIRC all modern CPUs can be traced back to Nehalem/Gulftown) it should be similar. Would be interesting to see where the optimal balance between core/cache is. IIRC after 4.5Ghz or so on Haswell-E it's diminishing returns .

Ooof. I have an L-binned 5960X, but that's a paperweight . I bought it as not working/broken, it was sadly a victim of a murderous ASUS Rampage V (IIRC they fixed the 2v vCore thing with a BIOS update or hardware revision or something tho).

also i found another sabertooth (broken) for kinda cheap, its cool enough for 35 dollars shipped to be worth it imo, just to have a cool thing

High but quite often a lot less than that. Got my X58 Classified SLI 3-Way and i7 920 for $106, and my Rampage III Formula and X5675 for $120, same year.

as far as regrettable motherboard purchases go, my only one is not waiting for the Crosshair VIII hero wifi to come back in stock, or not getting the taichi instead, but that is unrelated. i'd be super stoked if i got this sabertooth and it ended up working

It's an EVGA X58 Classified SLI 4-Way, and this one was brand new. Being a Rev 1.0 it needed the Westmere-EP mod to run well, Westmere-EP Xeons, but once that was done it's been bueno. Used to be in my bench rig, here it is when I was mucking around with my RVII after I first got it:

Also had a custom CPU loop on it once, got my X5670 to 4.74Ghz bench stable (didn't have that daily stable before I moved to  X99, RIP). And pretty sure that was barely pushing the board, would need LN2 to really do that. 

Also it has 7 PCIe slots, only other EVGA board to have that is the SR-2. 

So no, not at all a regret purchase. Other than finding a case for it being ass because they're all quite expensive. Thus the test bench and stuffing it in an Air 540.

Don't be. Radeon's driver team has been consistently horrible since mid-2019, using the card in a daily machine is a pretty shit experience. It is a nice card outside of the common blackscreens or full system crashes right after I complete something important in a game, but before it saves that said thing was completed, but yeah the crashes kinda overshadow that. I do need to get off my lazy ass and reinstall Adrenaline 2019 WQHL drivers tbh, may do that tonight. 

DDUing to reinstall stable drivers, then updating again to see if the new ones are fixed yet, only to find they aren't and needing to DDU again gets old fast. 

The card looks pretty I guess? Finances and not wanting to teardown my loop again are the main reasons keeping me from yeeting that fucker out and just getting a 2080 or something. 

 

TL;DR: Hardware fuckin excellent, but the drivers are bad enough that it outweighs that.

 I can't get any of my CPUs to behave any more either, but I gotta get back into it at some point. Have a half-built rig just sitting on my floor rn lol.

Indeed. Haven't folded in a bit though lol, thanks to the aforementioned crashes. On Adrenaline 2020 drivers the whole system blackscreens, hangs, crashes, then reboots, after even a minute or two under F@H load, even with the card bone stock.

Still the MSI one? I doubt re-pasting the NB will fix known issues with Westmere-EP Xeons on those.
