Crosshair looks nice, but not the price tag. I do love the look of the STRIX X370/B350-F boards. They'd look awesome in my grey Evolv, with carbon mesh CableMod cables.

Moved my 1600 to an Asus PRIME and it made no difference. Still crashes beyond 3.75

I've maxed out power to the CPU and it plan and simply refuses to go past 3750 and still be stable.

I managed to boot at 4GHz but it crashed as soon as I doubleckicked on Cinbench

Nah, not really. Sometimes I'm tempted, but then reality hits. I'm only a postman afterall.

I tend to buy good quality stuff from the lower end of product ranges.

I'm not getting full features per money spent that way, but I know I get a good tool or a product.

Hellyeah, not so much on the PC side, but definitely on the audio side.

The other day i was shopping for a new subwoofer for my HT setup, my room only needs a 10' sealed sub, but screw it, i got a 12' ported sub, just so i won't need to upgrade it further down the road.

Last March I bought my first computer and assembled it. this was back when 6700k and 980ti were king of the hill, and i got em both! liquid cooling, 850 EVO drive, HX1000i... it was wonderful.

Then i paired it with my VX228H (1080p 60hz monitor) and never looked back!

I like that down to the earth attitude. if i wanna buy something a bit more expensive, I usually save up for a couple of month so that it wouldn't affect my financial state that much. 

 

Taking good care of your stuff is also important. I sold my laptop for $600 after 4 years+ of usage.

I switched from studying economics to computer science. I can tell you that is a serious step in difficulty but I like it. After all, everyone would become a computer scientist if it would be easy. Lazy days are over!

My excuse though is that I try to plan for future needs, say 5 years on until I might NEED another upgrade.

 

At the moment am setting up another rig(in addition to my main rig, laptop, test rig and guest rig, not to mention the various RPi's and android boxes etc), haven't decided on final use case yet, but definitely will be hosting my NAS, VMs and used as an HTPC sometimes, haven't decided whether this will also be my pfsense router. I am trying to do this with proxmox right now to get this stuff done... if that doesn't work, then will try another solution, and if that doesn't work I may just use a linux distro instead and see what I can do.

The hardware currently is an i7 6700K non OC'd with a cryorig c7, and a z170 mobo, I may change this to a b250 mobo though. 16GB 2800Mhz ram. Some HDDs and SSDs I have spare, just until I've finalised my plans. Fractal design Node 802, and a 4 port intel NIC, and an EVGA g2 650W. My current NAS will be re-purposed if the above works, and if it doesn't work, may become my pfsense router instead.

 

That is way overkill for CPU I know, but had it spare... also may swap in a lesser CPU in the future and re-purpose the CPU again, maybe for a portable workstation/gaming build.

1070 fairly near it's launch for a 1080p 60hz monitor. Though it's not completely overkill if you look at using it for 4 years.

Around my house I am the King of OverKill. Just in my computer room alone i have 4 to 5 computers running and a laptop and the ipad and that is not including the 1000watts of sound on the mane desktop. The wife has to tell me to turn it down because i am shacking the walls.

I used a 980ti at 1080p for awhile. It was actually the greatest thing ever as I never had to worry about dipping below 60FPS and could run games at max settings with DSR. Sadly a 1080 doesn't cut it for me now days

That was my goal using the 1000w PSU     and I could potentially add a second 1080ti in the future for more performance. I don't really overclock (7700k isn't delidded and I don't want to remove the IHS, not confident enough). 

 

But this build replaced a fx8350+gtx960 so it's a pretty big update ^^". I upgraded to be able to play games in nvidia surround on my three 1080p monitors. But somehow I play more on single monitor.... NV surround is a little too buggy when browsing normally or watching videos in fullscreen.....

There is no such thing as overkill, only cost over time!  (Within reason and reasonable price/perf of course. Looking at you Titan X...)

 

I always copped a mouthful about 970-980-980SLI for 1080p, and I could never understand why. Even on 900 series release there was stuff that could scale with the extra performance. Less than a year later, we had The Witcher 3. Even made the 980ti cower at 1080p. 

 

I sometimes understand the impulse to cry "Overkill!", but if you can afford it, or you're not the one paying for it, why not? Especially if you're one of those (like me), who gets to splurge on hardware on a 3+ year basis. Fire once and forget, rather than fitting your build into a reasonable performance bracket now, and risk obsolescence sooner. The latter sometimes costing you more if you have to upgrade more frequently.

 

 

(To be fair, though, you could still totally game on an HD7850 and an old i5 and call it a day if you had to, these are as first world problems as first world problems can be)

I have a 7700k, a 1080ti, custom water cooled in a caselabs case, with 32gb of ram, four Samsung SSD's (only two of which are Evo's) and three monitors.

 

I only game occasionally. I work 40 hours a week, and spend as much of my free time on the computer as possible. Mainly browsing.
