50TB SSD starting to be available

WereCat

Sorry, repost.

Viking Technology (not very known OEM) is selling 50TB 3.5" SSD.

According to Viking Technology, the SSD should already be available in some places (where and for how much, no idea).

UHC-Silo SSD - Planar MLC NAND

-25TB and 50TB raw capacities

-60k/15k IO/s Read/Write

-500/350MBps

-Dual SAS interface

-16W

Life expectancy is 1 complete disk rewrite each day for 5 years according to Viking Technology.

(1825 rewrites, 91.25PB).

I am sure that Linus would love to get hands on these puppies. Honestly, I never expected 50TB SSD to be MLC. Toshiba now introduced their QLC to get high capacities for cheap, this means that once we will find out the price, it will be hella expensive.

Of coure my hand has a reaction time of 0.000005 so it still needs to be faster but this will work for now

50 tb and that read/write speed... Would that result in old HDD format times when formating the drive? On the other hand... Can't think of any usecase a consumer would need much higher read/writes for current mass storage drives.

That's cool, though far from consumers heh. But looking forward for TB(s) of SSD to become way more cheaper and closing to HDD pricing.

that read and write speeds tho....

you are not even able to fully rewrite the disk once a day due to the very low write speed, barely making it above 30TB a day in best conditions.

  • 2 weeks later...

Well, at least we are getting 50TB SSD's, not 50TB hard drives. Just image how slow a 50TB hard drive would be. Thats a lot of storage capacity for an SSD.
