Linus, you told such a BS story to the 980 guy (nice acting btw) and he was so nice to you I would think it would be a good idea to send him a 1080ti as a gift. You know since you guys have about 35 of them and he helped you possibly win this seasons scrapyard wars performance wise.

yh this got me too, they can't use their youtuber influence to get cheap parts, but they can tell wholly untruthful sob stories to people on an actual real life budget to knock the price down, while playing "tiny violin" music in the background.

 

seems kinda shitty just on principle, i know theres a budget in place for the sake of the game, but 980 guy might have to wait longer for his next upgrade now, while linus has a warehouse full of titans............

I thought that was crap too. They just blatantly ripped that guy off. Then their talking about flying to get other parts... Doesn't seem like they are playing to the spirit of the game.

I think they have to tell them by law before they release the film that they have been recorded and participate in a show and I am sure they are either compensated with some hardware or at least items and money returned at them at the end of it.

This is an entertainment programme. Its a part scripted reality show. Chill

This is the first I've watched so Idk actually Haha. I decided to watch this one because I like Paul's hardware and bitwit knows his stuff, even if he gets annoying after a bit.

Was a pretty sh***y move. Could have told a white lie without the emotional manipulation intended to tug heartstrings in an attempt to get something of value, cheaper.

He sold it willingly, yes, but probably not under the pretence of an outright lie, and unfortunately, that in my eyes is pretty scammy. I watch LinusTECHtips, not LinusSCAMtips. Could have just said "we're doing this for a project" didn't have to lie so badly.

Plus.. trying to get it for a cheaper price.. and then seriously considering spending $5000 on a charter flight while worrying about trying to bring down someone by $2 while funny in a hyperbole sense, is kinda lame considering some of the deceptive tactics to gain the upper hand simply because you have the money for such travel.

Should make hard-line rules of "allowable transport" and allowing lies that don't involve such BS level lies.

Hopefully you're right. Besides, they have that lawyer guy on the show more when talking about law, so hopefully he's made it pretty clear. Mind you, LTT is Canadian and they were in California which would have different rules. And maybe a disclaimer would be nice in the video. Don't want to give the wrong impression to impressionable youtubers that you can get away with everything shady. Not everyone will be as aware of laws and rules when emulating these things.

The video is fun and I enjoyed it, but there's a line with ethics and this time it was a pretty shady line. "It's just a prank bro"

It was definetly a shit move by Linus but that's how live works

If you fell for sob story, its your problem. Not to guy trying to scam you. I don't think compensation is needed. But I do hate it every time Linus does that. I don't like scammers of any kind. But I have very little feel for people who fall for it either. Not first time and won't be last.

Honestly if your going to sell used stuff most people will give you some BS to try and get the price down it's just this happens to be filmed

 

on the other hand since you are profiting even more then a normal person getting a used 980 by making it into a show and making a living off it I agree he should get something

Meh, you can get 980s for 200 shipped anyway. Reducing the shipping and PP fees would make it around 175-185 anyway.

I shall play the devil's advocate. The guy didn't have to take the deal and would undoubtedly come across someone else doing exactly the same. However even then I'm sure after doing the filming etc the guy would have been compensated some way with merch at the very least i hope, so giving him a 1080ti is a bit of a stretch one might think...

I have sold a lot of stuff in the past, both on ebay or in a tech shop, and it's impressive the amount of crap people can say in order to lower prices. I do find it's a crappy move, but it is still like a marketing campaign. I witnessed shops writing higher prices, then offering a 10% off on it just to sell them at the "normal" price. Honestly, I think @LinusTech showed us a good representation of how it is to bargain stuff and get the lower price possible. I'm sure you heard Luke and him talk about contacting the same person with multiple email accounts just to lower the prices. It's the same thing.

Another thought would be to make (yet another) comparison with LTT and TG/GT. Both do cringe worthy stuff to normal people for entertainment. Some viewers get angry about it, others don't.

I'm willing to negotiate on price but within low limit I've set. Plus I sometimes do split shipping with buyer.

If you sell on Craigslist or similar sites, it's guaranteed you're going to get low-balled and told everything under the sun to knock the price down. It's a fact. If the guy wanted more for it he would have sold it on eBay.
