Will 2 different 1080s work in sli?

yes 

I just want to make sure, but can i run a gigabyte g1 gaming 1080 with a zotac mini 1080 in sli with the gigabyte one being the card connected to the monitor?

They are the same chipset so yes it will work.

Also, high bandwidth bridge is gimmick.... just use 2 soft ribbon bridges... especially if the cards have different width.

For Nvidia you need same GPU chips, and same VRAM

 

Only AMD allows different VRAM sizes

Will one ribbon bridge work fine on its own or should i get a second one if i can?

I think so with the 1080. Won't be enough with only one flimsy ribbon. Their Epicness just mean they will require more datalanes

I did some research and i read that there is no performance increase with 2 sli bridges as the other connection point is for 3 way sli.

Someone on here had issues mixing zotac with other brands in sli

If you're running different PCB designs in SLI to keep the clock speeds the same the voltages have to be different. Remember that in SLI the two card become one, doesn't even matter where you plug the monitor in other than that card will run 5-10c hotter. So having two differnet designs become one causes instability, in everey case I've tried.

Ah. As the zotac one is the only one i can fit in my case should i get it and just hope i don't have too many issues?

You can try, but it's risky. Also remember to connect the monitor to the bottom card, not the top. That will help the top card run cooler.

Ok. So just to confirm, it doesn't matter which GPU i plug the monitor in to, right? Also is the potential instability with just zotac cards mixed with other manafacturers or is it like that with any? Also what do you mean by instability, what will be unstable?

Correct, which monitor you plug into does not change which is the primary card. Which is the primary card can change game to game.

They will run on the speed of the slower one, that's all... depending on your case and if these cards are open air cooling system I would strongly suggest you to be careful about thermals... SLI should be done with closed air cooling system (blower type) or water cooled cards since having two cards generating heat that is stuck inside the case will not only be bad for them but all the other hardware.

so for sli I recommend the same card or a reference as some companies don't support it

EVGA told me they only back SLI between the same models. When I delt with htem on customer support I had to list issues only running a single card.

According to EVGA none of their custom cards work with a reference PCB.
