True. Which one of the two 1440p ones then (Agon and Pixio). Take price into account. I know the Agon is probably better, but which for the price?

i would go for the cheaper one, features argon offer for the extra price is not worth it.

Get the Gsync one if you will be gaming lots.

I do game a lot. However, I don't really notice tearing that much... Now I think about it 1440p is probably better. I hate low res things. I've just never owned a 1080p monitor lol. Only 720p and 1440p on my Macbook.

Do you consider ONLY the monitor you've linked up above ?

I had a smillar dilemma but I found somewhat of a sweetspot for me by Dell:

the price's a little bit higher but reasonably and it has all 144hz 1440p and G-sync

My recommendation: https://www.amazon.com/Acer-XB241YU-bmiprz-23-8-inch-2560x1440/dp/B01LJUNMYK/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1492866000&sr=1-1&keywords=acer+xb241yu

Dell S2417dg only, if it's cheaper. The Acer is better (i had both, i switched to Acer).

You might use the Monitor for 5-10 years. Are those 100 bucks more or less really such a dealbreaker? I mean, you also payed such a Price for your GPU, and you will replace it in 3-4 years max, maybe even 2 years.

G-Sync, 165 Hz, AND 1440p resolution. Best of all worlds. ^^

And the 1440p TN Panels use a 8-bit Panel. The 1080p Panels have a 6 bit + FRC Panel.

Any particular reason why the Acer is better? There has to be a good reason, it's quite a bit more expensive. And I seriously doubt I will be replacing my GPU in 4 years. I built my PC (at least the GPU, not the CPU) to last into college. I've got a few years.

Both suffer from Color banding (pretty much all 1440p TN panels with 144+ Hz, from what i've read, maybe even IPS ones).

The Dell too, pretty noticeable. Mostly not in Games, more in youtube videos. a LITTLE in garmes (Dark szenes...  Diablo 3 when it's a Dar Greater rift, stuff like that).

But, the Dell has a bad Gamma setting. Everything is too bright. Colors look washed out.

There is NO Gamma setting in the OSD Menu. You have to use the Nvidia Driver. Gamma from 1.0 to like 0.7 to 0.9, depending on taste, makes it MUCH (!!!) better. 0.8 looks almost exactly like my IPS Screen Dell U2414H from color reproduction).

However, if you do that, the Color Banding get's slightly worse. Like, 6 Color shades go into 4 color shades. Difficult to explain...

NOw to the Acer. It does sadly have a somewhat oily/grainy coating on the panel. I don't like it. Dell was better there.

But, the Acer has a MUCH (!!) Better OSD. Much more features, much more control adn stuff to tweak. One of them beeing gamma.

Setting the Gamma to 2.5 or the highest step "Game" makes the colors much less "washed out", and the Gamma looks pretty ok to me.

Banding: It even gets Weaker, because everything is darker.

Both have the same Color Banding (only in very very Dark shades), but you can Counter it much better with the Acer (however, you can't get completely rid of it).

Of course, if the Price difference is 400 vs. 500 USD, get the Dell.

But if it's similar to Germany for example, the Acer costs 469€, and the Dell is back up to 489€ (it was down to 420-450€~ for a while this year), i would prefer the Acer. Just because of the OSD and the Included Gamma control.

At least all that is the case for ME .

i've seen a Picture from another user ( Star wars episode 7 trailer on youtube, at 0:13), where he made a Picture of his display with his smartphone, and no Banding was visible. For me, it was. But i got it better than with dell.

Keep in Mind... That's something to be picky about,. many people probably won't even notice it. ^^

But still, worth mentioning, i think.

In practical use, for Gaming itself, it's not a real dealbreaker. In 99% of all cases, you should not see anything of this problem.

Maybe only in some very dark games.

Worth mentioning: I've tried the Doom Demo just for this. And the first level is a VERY dark setting. I did not see ANY banding here at all. Not with Acer, not with dell.

Edit: I meant, usually a GPU is replaced before the Monitor. ^^

Huh. Of all the reviews I've seen I haven't seen this mentioned. I play overwatch a lot (by no means a dark game), so that might say something... The Acer is more expensive here in the US. So... is the Dell's color banding that bad? Should I avoid it?

The Review from PCmonitors mention it: https://pcmonitors.info/reviews/dell-s2417dg/

But yea, it's not like you see it always. it's just in very dark shades, where details are clipping into artefacts etc.

And for the people who are happy with it: Either they don't see it / are not sensitive to it, or they don't have it.

Nah, if it's much cheaper, you don't have to avoid it. If you can get it for 400 dollar, go for it. Very great Monitor  with awesome specs. The Banding is okay especially for that great price.

And in Overwatch, you will probably never see it. ^^

For example, here is a Youtube video of a german Lets-player, who plays Minecraft. here in a Dark dave (a situation where Banding is visible).

1. My Dell U2414H: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B6q6D5x52CTHcmZ2cTVUME44c0U

Banding almost not visible, because too dark there.

2. Dell S2417dg: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B6q6D5x52CTHLTJnY19ZLWJKNGs

3. Acer XB241YU: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B6q6D5x52CTHajlGVGlIaE5EMlk

Here, i had Gamma setting on 2.5 or "Game" via the Monitor-OSD. Looks better than on Dell, but still present.

______________

Or the star wars trailer at minute 0:13:

Dell U2414H: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B6q6D5x52CTHeURMS1dLamlkUVk

Dell S2417dg: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B6q6D5x52CTHbkVoYmdrVDA2R2s

Acer looks similar, maybe slightly better. The Difference like above in Minecraft lets-play is smaller in other cases.

..... Don't let that scare you too much. Like i said, this happens only in such very dark shades, and mostly on youtube stuff (where videos are compressed etc).

If i watch Star Wars episode 7 (which i have as a 1080p Blu ray Rip on HDD), the Banding is almost not visible at all.  Absolutely NOT compareable with the Youtube clip.

For Gamers, it doesn't matter much, since in worst cases, there will be just very slight/minor Banding, in 99,x% of all games no Banding at all.

Really, Test it for yourself. you can always return it, or send it to Dell for a replacement or anything. Don't just "not buy" it beause of this, since most with these specs will have that.

On the other hand, the IPS variants with 27" that cost 700+, probably won't have this. But, instead they will have bad quality control, and a bad Panel type. Many have strong backlightbleeding (i had one, returned it the next day), an unusual high amount of dead pixel cases, stronger glow/clouding etc... so not really better in all cases... :P

I am quite happy with the Acer XB241YU TN Monitor. The Banding is there, but in most cases it doesn't botehr me, or it's not visible at all.

Still, this is something worth mentioning.

Wow it is pretty bad on the S2417DG.  The Acer XB241YU is sorta expensive for it's size. I think I'll still stick with the S2417DG then... I can deal with the banding I guess.
