dubbed Zesty Zapus, Ubuntu 17.04 and it's derivatives were released today

changes on the Ubuntu base:

  • 32bit PPC support dropped; no alteration to ppc64el
  • the default DNS resolver is now systemd-resolved
  • for new installs, a swap file will be used instead of a swap partition - a la Windows' pagefile
  • Ubuntu 17.04 is based on the Linux Kernel release series 4.10

each Ubuntu flavor has it's own changes, I only listed above those that are common to everyone

going back to A, already  been decided, though fun fact: Ubuntu naming scheme never started from A, the first version was Warty Warthog in 2004 and only in 2006 they started releasing following an alphabetic order with Dapper Drake (after Warty came Hoary Hedgehog and Breezy Badger)

18 is because of the year 17.04 or 17.10 means 2017 April and 2017 October hence the first release being 4.10 because it was first released in October of 2004

I'll give it a few weeks before upgrading, I only just got Nvidias 378 driver running nicely on my system and I don't want to upgrade the kernel and make everything wonky again.

That said I might end up ditching Ubuntu entirely now Nvidia have dropped OS X Pascal Support, its taken me months to get a stable Linux install that I'm happy with and it seems a shame to get rid of it but I only went back to Linux because I get a 1070 and it wasn't supported in OS X. Now that it is I find myself thinking I'd prefer OS X to Linux.

There's a small part of me that's considering dropping Win 10 and doing an OS X Ubuntu dual boot but then I remember that less than half my Steam library works, a fraction of my Origin library works, GOG doesn't work at all neither does GTA V nor Elite Dangerous.

If only I didn't sell my other SSDs because I used to have a tri boot.

which of your origin games work? In my experience only steam supports Linux properly. GOG galaxy doesn't work does it? But some gog games support linux. and they didn't even release their own witcher3. Does origin have any Linux games? Don't think so.

The origin client itself isn't compatible with Linux.

Witcher 3 (damnit, I need to play this game lol. Bought it ages ago but never played it) isn't either and i'm surprised cos I thought it did....

Your attitude certainly doesn't help btw. The Linux gaming scene via Steam is actually feasible for a lot of people who play eSPorts titles or Indie titles.

I attempted last night to switch my kids computer over to Ubuntu, but too much research is needed. Finding and installing GPU drivers was over my head. I need a .exe equivalent. I love the idea of Linux, but I need it more user friendly.

UbuntuMate?

Is that a direct competitor to Mint then?

Sort of. Mate is a community DE that wasn't directly developed by the Mint team and wasn't supported until Mint 12.

UbuntuMate was a community distro based on 14.04LTS that gained official support from Canonical in 15.04.

Upgraded to 17.04 yesterday, unfortunately some of my indicators don't work now including dropbox and private internet access app, the programs themselves work fine, but I can no longer see the IP address or change settings/servers with private internet access, and with dropbox it was just handy to see last updated files. I had a look around to see if there was a fix, but the ones I tried didn't work http://www.webupd8.org/2017/04/fix-appindicator-not-working-for.html

Hoping there's a fix coming soon, it's useable at the moment but if I want to change servers/settings I have to re-install, which isn't very practical. I'll keep looking for a solution, but if anyone thinks they can point me in the right direction that'd be great, thanks :)

You should try installing any linux on a 990 fx chip set to get it the it to connect to a network turns out you need to enable IOMMU in the BIOS but doing this disables usb 2.0 but enables 3.0 ports. To get usb 3.0/2.0 and networking all working you too edit GRUB CMD to have iommu=soft and disable it in the bios.

I spent days and I don't mean here and there a good 4-5 hours over the course of a few days trying to get it to work until I found a forum post that helped me out.
