My Mum has an Asus U38N (A8 4555M, 4GB RAM, 120GB SSD, 1080p IPS screen) alongside a Transformer Prime TF201 (64GB SSD, 1GB RAM, Tegra 3 @ 1.2GHz all cores, 720p? IPS screen). The TF201 got the most use by far. And its been the same with her Galaxy Tab A vs her HP Elitebook 2760p. She doesn't even bother to buy a mouse for it she uses it so little, just borrows one of mine instead,

Also... as @Daring has said, without actual numbers, all this shows is that android is booming right now. Although a HUGE percentage of that android market is on cheap "semi" smart phones with only very rudimentary online functionality in the third world.

This might just be me, but countries where the salary is relatively low, a cheap android device might be more accessible than an expensive Windows PC. Which could explain why "regions" like Asia, India, Africa, etc... have a higher percentage of Android devices compared to North America, Europe, etc... who have a much higher percentage of Windows devices.

Either that or because a lot of people have multiple android devices vs 1 PC per family. (Not everyone have a dedicated computer for them, their wife and all their kids.)

Windows numbers are not going down, Android numbers are going up. There's a direct correlation between those two freaking line. It doesnt take a rocket scientist to understand it. normal cellphones are disappearing. Even super cheap phones have Android installed on them nowadays.

OP forgot the fact that any PC that is less than 10 years is perfectly fine for a casual user my parents certainly can't tell the difference between my gaming rig a 10 years PC running on a Q6600 with 2GBs of RAM and no discrete graphics. 

 

Casuals aren't tech savvy like we are they don't care about powerful CPUs or discrete GPUs and there are no significant bottlenecks in modern PCs to push them to upgrade smartphones will see a similar trend down the line

Percentage of this "market" doesn't really make sense when it's not bound with the shift in Total Market.

 

PCs are a mature market, whereas smartphone adoption is still taking off the world over.  Plus, a lot of homes & businesses have more Phones than PCs.

You conclusion is incorrect, but that is just because your basing it off usage, not sales. Yes, x86 is shrinking, but it's not the 'pc is dead' that the 'media' says it is. 

 

Looking at "http://gs.statcounter.com/faq#methodology", I can see that their data is incomplete. And they could quite possibly be comparing different market segments and assuming they are the same thing. e.g. Android Tablet v Android Phone - even burner phones these days are android, these devices are clearly not tablet/PC replacements, but are counted as such. Well not by statcounter, but people like you (if your a special snowflake read that as 'journalists') who appear to be inferring that this is not the case and x86 is dead.

 

Also, it appears as though statcounter has a very low capture rate when compared to the internet at large, more accurate figures would come out of places like Akamai.

while people are using mobile platforms more that doesn't mean PC is not liked or needed. browsing on my surface pro 3 is more enjoyable than at desk and im sure it is that way for many peop'e with thier phones and tablets, but when i need to work or game i still turn to my trusty PC. People are upgrading at longer intervals but that was always going to happen as the market saturates.

Don't blame them... most people using Android/iOS do no more than casual social media, binge some random mobile games every so often and do stupid ass edits of pictures. If there is any game they want it is likely on a console they have access to.

So the market has changed in such a way, that everyone has a smart phone, that can (and will) go on the internet? These markets are not covering the same usage, but a complementary. in India android and mobile are booming, so are they in poor regions of Africa. often these people wouldn't be able to use a laptop or desktop in the first place due to environmental restrictions. android is just tapping into more market, not replacing windows. if the overall market share goes up but windows pc's don't get adopted by the new market share then windows percentages are going to go down even tough the actual number stays the same. there is a reason why % is called RELATIVE. its meant to show relations between things. absolute numbers (100.000 machines for example) are exactly that, ABSOLUTE. they won't change depending on the value's of other subjects. this is why teaching statistics in high school is useful, so people know how to read graphs and don't just follow media and "experts" but can audit it for themselves.

Guys, no that's not correct. People are not "dropping the PC" but the way we use computers is changing. YES we don't use PCs as much. People don't need to full PC as often anymore and are probably out and about more often on the internet. You don't hop on a laptop when on a bus or something. Internet usage has just changed from PC to mostly mobile devices such as a phone or tablet. Look at your own usage. We here are PC users most likely and many of us have gaming PCs. I probably use my phone for most of my internet usage now days. I can take my mobile phone anywhere. It's why Microsoft is doing this continuum thing where a phone can turn into a PC like device. Also, two in one tablets are getting big cuz people like the mobility of tablets and versatility of two in ones.

 

It's just our internet use has changed. PC is not dying just being used less.

Less buyers = higher priced goods only as long as there isn't a backlog of prefabricated components stuck on a shelf. If there is a lot of unsold supply then the price tag will drop like a hot potato until sales are made.

 

Lower demand will increase price per unit long-term (considering the numbers don't recoup), but will actually decrease the component sticker price in the short term for stuff that is prefabricated to meet an expected demand if that demand never existed.

 

If you have 1000 CPUs that are leftover because of decreased demand and the price of said CPU was $100, you'd decrease the price to as low as it will go in stages until all of the unsold CPUs go out in a firesale before the next generation renders them obsolete (I think this is what is happening with the sapphire nitro OC+ r9 fury on Newegg right now... at least until they realized they dropped the price enough to warrant a high enough demand to increase the sell price to $265 from $245). Incurring a full $100 loss on each of the theoretical CPUs not sold would cost you $100,000, but if you sold them at $90 for sometime until say... 150 sold, then $80 for another 250 or so units, and sold the rest at $70 you'd only incur a $24,500 loss. This would essentially save the company $75,500 compared to the previous loss. If you didn't do this before the next generation was released you might only sell 300-400 for $70 a pop and the rest for like $50 per unit. This would cost you $35,000-$42,000. In other words, selling for a loss is sometimes required to cover your butt for short term loss in demand.

For me, it was the price drop of the cheapest RX 480 (Sapphire Nitro) to match one of the 3 cheapest RX 470 (also a Sapphire Nitro). Then there was the Transformer Prime TF201 which had a significant price drop not long after it launched as Asus had planned the TF701 well before the launch of the TF201, then there are all of the laptops and desktops, white-goods and so on that you see with large price cuts during the end of a financial year.

It wasn't because of the demand of the TF201, but because Asus new full well that the wifi+bluetooth+GPS on the TF201 had utterly abysmal reception due to the solid aluminium backing (fun fact-the iPad 2's Apple logo was plastic to prevent interferance), and later on the screen (glass+LCD) partially separating from the back (it always ended up happening from weeks to months after purchasing it).

Also, for example there wasn't a demand for Kabylake at all, yet we got it anyway. And it was the same for Broadwell.
