The U2 iPod was just a branded iPod. It had nothing to do with the RED charity campaign. Also, calling it "red" is a bit of a stretch. It was black with red accents. It did look pretty sexy for the time though, when most iPods were still "boring white".

But why not give us choice? I know that's a new concept to Apple lately, but they already give us choice in other respects. Give us red + white, or red + black.

 

I did like the dBrand Red + Black variant that someone linked earlier in the thread, but I wouldn't personally use dBrand, because I assume it affects case compatibility. Using a case is more important than using a vinyl wrap.

'Choice' for Apple mean $50 for a storage bump

God damn, Apple needs to come out with the black variant too. It looks, in my opinion, way better than the white faceplate does.

would look good even with gold.

White front is simply ugly apple, face it. Black goes well with everything, even white.

Pretty weak they don't tell you how much they donate. Which likely means it's a very minuscule amount.

On a $200 iPod Touch, they previously donated around $20 USD per unit.

 

I'm guessing the minimum amount they have to give is 10% per unit.

That wouldn't be too bad. I have a feeling it's probably just $20 again and they don't want it to seem like they're only giving 3% of each unit. Really, a company like Apple should be donating half of the cost to charity, especially if they're promoting the product like that.
