This server any good

So I need a server for surveylance of my grain sheds and farm, for doing temperature monitoring and also to run a nas for my home. There is a catch though, I need it for under 50 quid plus shipping (excluding software). I don't want to get any monthly fee things either. I was looking at this server on eBay: http://m.ebay.co.uk/itm/Dell-2650-PowerEdge-SMP01-2U-Rack-mount-Server-COA-Windows-server-Standard2003-/272513613941?nav=WATCHING_ACTIVE

Will that work? Also what software should I run? A detailed guide would be very helpful.

either look for a raspberry pi or android box with sata or pick up an atom mobo and a cheap case and PSU and a sata card. hdds are cheap if you just want a day or two of surveillance.

idk

Milestone is a great surveillance application and is free for up to 8 cameras, software will run on any basic windows computer and really the only thing you need to be careful of is storage configuration (protection level of data).

As far as surveillance goes that server would work but it would be extremely power-thirsty.
As has been previously suggested, since the server does not come with hard drives it would probably be cheaper (and easier) to use old consumer-grade equipment and putting the HDD's in a RAID array.

For NAS though, buing a prebuilt NAS (or building one yourself) would be extremely inexpensive,
As far as combining the two machines goes, I would be too scared of losing data to combine them but in th end it is up to you.

it's a potato....

thats the server processing power...

a potato...

just get a raspberry pi or use a computer you no longer use...

that would be better, and it would be cake an you would be baked (the cake is a lie)

Would this work? What OS's will work on this server, and can I use Oracle VM to virtualise EasyNAS on it? I have some old HDDs lying around, and can get them very cheap from my local PC store. And will OBS work for recording multiple cameras at the same time?

Forget about that ebay server already, its an antique boat anchor that likely has a scsi backpanel anyway, so you will not be able to use any modern HDD's in it and its 32bit, so no modern operating systems either.

It realistically has a negative value,  someone is trying to sell it to a sucker in lieu of having to pay something to take it away as e-waste.  With respect to the 2U Dell poweredge series of servers, anything older than the 2950 has a negative value and is a boat anchor.    A 2950 is oldest thing that is generally considered still usable, but only for light duties,  You need to move to something like a R510 or R710 to get something that resembles modern hardware.

So an old server like that won't run Ubuntu 16.04 LTS SERVER? And it won't take an old 250GB HDD?

It only takes SCSI HDD, so a SATA HDD will not fit.  you can install 16.04 on it, but only the 32bit version. which is limited to 4GB of RAM.

Can I get an adaptor from SCSI to Sata?? Or Mabey To IDE? IU have some old IDE HDDs lying around. Also, what would the max storage space be on tha server with SCSI HDDs?

Just buy a used desktop, it doesn't have be enterprise hardware to run monitoring services and NAS services. Buy maybe an old sandy bridge or ivy bridge desktop somebody is trying to get rid of. Even a bloomfield i7 920 would do you right. Don't get caught up in it being a "server." If you're trying to save money that is.

@Joelsome2211 - Get over that server that you have a hard on for. Just buy a cheap used pc or sometimes they are called refurbished pc either from the online classifieds, ebay, or department store. You can find some great deals out there.

Core 2 Duo are ultra cheap

Where abouts in the UK do you live?

From the link, I'd say anything Intel Core 2 and higher, which is everything lower down in the page.

BTW I wasnt even looking at servers, which might come in cheaper, I'd say Core 2 Duo is on par with Xeon 51xx series cpu's in the server area.

Here is a good guide for a cpu hierchy,

I have an old system with a Sempron 3400+ single core clocked a 1.8GHz... will that work? (I wanted the server because it would be better than this beat up old crapbag that calls itself a PC. I also wanted the server because it would have better HDD storage options. BTW the old PC has a 80GB IDE HDD.

Being "server" does not give you better storage options. A raid card can give you access to SAS or SCSI if that's what you wanted.

I don't know that I'd run a single core but it should be fine in a small environment.

Instead of converting SCSI to SATA, you'd just buy a SATA hba/raid card. Which is pointless because the cost would be the same as buying a used desktop for $100 off CL/Ebay. The technology is different, not just the physical connection so there is no "adapter."

I also wanted the server because it would have better HDD storage options. BTW the old PC has a 80GB IDE HDD.

this would already be too slow and if you want to use this thing for surveillance you want much HDD space to store the video on.

if you are serious about what you want to do put some money where your mouth is and buy a used PC with up to date connections for HDD´s and all that stuff.

I'm not trolling. I just want to have a server and I have a budget of 50 quid (a quid is a pound)
