I don't think they are overpriced if you have an iPhone 7, the phone covers that part :b

The issue is that those companies are not looking to not be overpriced, they instead see this as a market segment where they can price gouge more than other marker segments.

For example, look at fitness trackers. http://electronics360.globalspec.com/article/8074/teardown-fitbit-charge-2

http://electronics360.globalspec.com/article/5623/teardown-what-is-inside-the-fitbit-surge-fb501

For the most overpriced smartphones (apple ones with a 400-450% profit margin, while with fitness trackers, you see a 600%+ profit margin at the factory level).

Outside of that, you also see massive overpricing with Bluetooth speakers. http://electronics360.globalspec.com/article/5806/teardown-jbl-flip-2

Overall, most market segments where items are overpriced, are not overpriced because they require a lot of work to make a product. hey are overpriced because one company manages to sell something insanely overpriced, and other people come in with the intention of making similar profit margins. Even for cheaper items, you will still see high margins.

No Beast X? That would've been a better buy than the AirPods and it's still made by Apple.

I think I'm going to stick with my TaoTronics Bluetooth Headphones (you got your amazon affiliation), I prefer having a wire connecting them. Nice vid though.

Linus included Bragi the Dash which is more expensive than the AirPods. In fact, Beats X is slightly cheaper ($149.95) than the AirPods ($159).

Agree on the TaoTronics comments. I am surprised that it was not included in the test. I would have liked to hear their "expert" view...

Can anyone recommend a headset with a good microphone? I tried the TaoTronics 16 and Aukey EP-B4, however, they both have bad mic quality.

@LinusTech

Hey Linus

Does iPod Touch 5th generation support wireless Bluetooth speaker, why Apple AirPods doesn't support iPod touch 5th generation? Why they restricted iOS 10 or later version? Where is the problem if apple just support/enable only listening music feature sacrificeing other features? Can you explain!!!!!

Hey Linus and crew,

I watched your video "CHEAP Apple Airpods Alternatives - Do they suck??" dated 25th Feb 2017. I have a loss of hearing so I don't see the value in $189.00 JayBird earphones. I'm a Xiaomi Mi Mix 2s user (I love Xiaomi). I only use them during exercise. I was hoping now we are two years down the line and technology is flying past, maybe it's time to do another video for budget wireless earbuds.

AirPods can be used in any Bluetooth compatible device, however this is limited to Audio and battery information. iOS 10 brings a comparability layer for AirPods that allowed the use of the in-built AirPods processor.

While an old thread, at the time, I provided some examples.

The overall issue with apple is they love their sky high profit margins.

https://electronics360.globalspec.com/article/14978/teardown-apple-airpods-pro-with-charging-case

(about a 500% markup over BOM + Manufacturing cost)

Compare that to a product that has a relatively smaller target market, as well a costs associated with ongoing driver updates (monthly updates for years).

https://electronics360.globalspec.com/article/14780/teardown-nvidia-geforce-rtx-2080-super

Or another "mass market" device

https://electronics360.globalspec.com/article/13866/teardown-microsoft-surface-go

$308.05 BOM + Manufacturing, but a MSRP of $399

The product also gets a few years of driver and bios updates.

When it comes to massive multi hundred percent margins, that is usually an apple thing, with exceptions for mid range and up Bluetooth speakers across all brands, and photography equipment.
