On Wednesday, Yahoo revealed the second major breach of its systems, following the September disclosure of a widespread hack. The newly announced intrusion, which occurred in 2013, affected more than 1 billion users, and the government employee data is likely part of that cache. The other hack was disclosed earlier but took place later, in 2014, and Yahoo has said it threatened 500 million accounts. "Yahoo has taken steps to secure user accounts and is working closely with law enforcement," the company said in a statement issued Wednesday.

The group Komarov had been surveilling, which he calls Group E, was carefully keeping the sale off of public cybercrime forums. They said they had a database of logins for more than 500 million -- perhaps up to 1 billion -- Yahoo accounts for sale for $300,000.

Komarov watched the hacker group sell the database three times, and he was able to intercept the database during the sales. Two buyers were large spamming groups that are on the Spamhaus Register of Known Spam Operations, or ROKSO, list. The other had an unusual request before completing the purchase. The buyer gave the sellers a list of ten names of U.S. and foreign government officials and business executives, to verify their logins were part of the database. That led Komarov to speculate the buyer was a foreign intelligence agency.

I find it quite troubling to hear that a government agency traded with criminals for the data of one million people. The fact that the data of one billion users ended up in the hands of criminals and were sold, is even more troubling. I find that a huge company like Yahoo should take security a lot more serious.

Inc.’s newly disclosed data breach, and their names, passwords, telephone numbers, security questions, birth dates, and backup e-mail addresses are now in the hands of cybercriminals. It’s a leak that could allow foreign intelligence services to identify employees and hack their personal and work accounts, posing a threat to national security. These employees had given their official government accounts to Yahoo in case they were ever locked out of their e-mail.

 I hope this will give governments more incentive to make laws on cyber security more strict.

I only use my yahoo for spam stuff, changed my password for the thought of security. I really don't care what happens on that account. Now if google was the one hacked I would begin locking everything down, and I mean everything. Everything from internet accounts to my house.

 I agree, I don't think it was a hack to get some cash, if it was a way to incite terror, they would just dump the data on the internet. Instead they sold it.

I have 4 Yahoo mail accounts.

All of them were hacked, and I receive about 12 "Sign-in Attempts" emails on each account a day.

Even after changing their passwords 3 times in the last month.

Yes, this is ridiculous and that's the problem. 
Of course it would take time, personally I just couldn't trust a company who screws up like this twice.

The main problem is that if you choose an email, it is very hard to change the email on every site that you visited. I dont think most people use Yahoo because they think its better that other email services, but because they made an account a long time ago and cant be bothered with changing.

Dell was having a $600 off sale for the fully specced out model, so I decided to get it :P

 

-Crapbook

Fully specced out early 2013 Macbook "pro" with gt 650m and constant 105c temperature on the CPU (GPU is 80-90C) when doing anything intensive...

A 2013 laptop with a regular sized battery still has better battery life than a 2017 laptop with a massive battery! I think this is a testament to apple's ability at making laptops, or maybe how little CPU technology has improved even 4+ years later (at least, until the recent introduction of 15W 4 core CPUs). Anyway, I'm never going to get a 35W CPU laptop again unless battery technology becomes ~5x better than as it is in 2018.

Apple knows how to make proper consumer-grade laptops (they don't know how to make pro laptops though). I guess this mostly software power efficiency related, but getting a mac makes perfect sense if you want a portable/powerful laptop that can do anything you want it to with great battery life.
