Any way to convert 558s to closed back

Guest

I made the mistake of buying open back headphones for listening in my living room. The audio leakage is pretty bad. Is there any way I can change it from opened back to closed back?

dumb question

Just return them and get a refund then buy another pair.

It's possible, but if you want them to sound any good afterwords, you'll practically need an audio engineering degree, and you'll need many, many iterations.

Why not see if there's someone with a 598C that wants to trade or something?

Yup, they refreshed the 500 line and the HD 569s are closed. Don't know how its sound compares to the others but worth a try.

There are some review's that I've found, I don't know the sites well so I can't vouch for them but still something.
Major Hifi review
Audio 46 review
I'm on the lookout for stores that have them here, to try them my self. If I get the opportunity to do so any time soon I'll report back on how they compare to the 558s.

The headphones weren't designed to be closed in the first place. Doing this would most likely worsen the sound, and it'd have to be a pretty thick material to properly make them closed.

Don't waste your time or money on a mod, just return them and get something else. Someone on the forum here might be willing to swap a closed pair for yours as well.

If he can return them

Its a 2-5 dollar mod to try if he can't

Many people have done this type of mod with descent results

And if he has to pay to ship them off somewhere with having trust still worth it

Aren't those drivers already used in a closed similar designed headphone? And if not completely sealed could have a semi open which will be better for his use at the cost of couple dollars and little time

well I would expect the closed models to have more bass compared to the open models. Sadly no frequency response graph, so I cannot say for sure.

You can, but I'd both be fairly difficult, and fairly stupid.

Sell them, and buy a proper set of closed cans.

The whole point of the 5XX series is for their incredible midrange and soundstage, which you'd likely be killing in the process.

Without EQ or proper physical tuning they'd likely sound like ass.

The HD 598C's exist purely for that reason, but they seem to be a fairly muddy headphone so far.

Don't tread on me. I squish, and white liquid comes out. It's icky, trust me.

dont assume plz

people have done it to numerous headphones with descent results especially the dt series

and its not a tough mod at all, quite easy in fact,

Considering the 770's already exist, it's a proven concept, but I find it extremely hard to believe that people manage to rebuild and entire earcup, or cover the entire outer face [unless 3D printed] and have it sound respectable without proper physical tuning or EQ. Do you have any measurements?

And the fact that it supposedly works with an entirely different brand of headphones is irrelevant.

I don't see your reasoning with that. You'd have to remove both the mesh grille on the outside, manufacture a covering, and then seal it properly. From buying a headphone to manufacturing part of an enclosure and then properly sealing it is not an easy mod in relativity to most headphone modification.

That's great - if you were to close the 598, it would definitely sound even worse.

no need to remove the grill just cover from the inside

just like the tape strip they already have in the hd558

I swear people are obtuse on doing things themselves

Yes I own them. Picked them up for 99.99 + tax on Black Friday from amazon.

I'm not even comparing them to my HD650s, the 598Cs don't really sound better than my 558s. It's louder for sure, but I can't confidently say they sound any better. Definitely not worth the regular price of 150 in my opinion.

I also have a pair of ATH m50s, as well as beyerdynamic DT 770's both of which sound better IMO. Though I hate the m50s because they're uncomfortable IMO.

?????????????????????????????????

For 100 dollars, they're nothing special. I never said they sounded bad, they're just not great for 100 dollars.

And in the end, personal preference plays a good role. You can see this in r/headphones, lots of people don't like the 598 Cs, while another group like them.
