Nvidia Titan XP has same FP64 and FP16 performance as GTX 1080

Yeah its something I did a fair bit of research into before grabbing my titan x last year - most of the modern render engines like cycles, octane, vray and mentalray don't require any DP(aside from Octane for hair calculations, though not 100% sure).
The general consensus I've found is that geforce cards outperform quadro's in these engines quite effectively. Not only in actual render times but obviously in price to performance.
 

Oh. But do you think that it'd be worth it for someone like me to grab an Nvidia TITAN X for my system for not just gaming, but rendering as well? By the way, if you've checked out my profile, you may have seen that I am a computer graphic arts and video game developer major.

I'm not really quite sure how 2D things work in terms of vram - but if you're modelling in 3d and rendering things for game dev then yeah, I reckon its a pretty solid investment.

Okay. So it looks like I will go ahead and commit that purchase on December when my Fall semester is over. I also plan on doing Sci-Fi and Fantasy modeling for video games along with some digital art :). It's always good to be flexible because you can fill in an absent person's role if they're not present or available. So me saying that would mean I would be specializing in both 3D Animation and Modeling, digital art, and (would love to do this one :D) voice acting.

Yep. Hey I can volunteer for that one once I know what character I need to immerse myself into :D

 

For the .blend file, how many frames would that contain? Because I plan on doing the same for my system in 3ds Max (I have a student license) in Nvidia Iray for both single-frame and whole sequence with x passes (where x represents the number of passes for a render per frame). Trust me, a 960 4GB FTW GPU with a 750 Ti in tandem blew through one of my WIPs with 5,000 passes in Iray.

For the .blend file, how many frames would that contain? Because I plan on doing the same for my system in 3ds Max (I have a student license) in Nvidia Iray for both single-frame and whole sequence with x passes (where x represents the number of passes for a render per frame). Trust me, a 960 4GB FTW GPU with a 750 Ti in tandem blew through one of my WIPs with 5,000 passes in Iray.

Let's just wait what AMD is gonna drag out after the 480 if it beats the 1080 or something really close with a price that is great for people that would be a game changer. If not well nvdia monopoly on the higher end brackets.

I don't understand what's so surprising, it was the same story with the Titan Black and Titan X. Only the original Titan had better DP performance. Also I'd expect a bit more than 30% performance boost.

Titan Black also had good DP performance. Anything GK110 based did have good DP.

Yea but iirc that was because of the architecture it wasn't specially enabled on titan. Only the first one had twice the FP64 ratio of a GTX card

I stand corrected, surprisingly even the 780ti had 1/3, I guess it wasn't as emphasized since it was released after the titan. Now that I look at it the DP performance of every other card is INSANELY low and I understand why its especially frustrating with the titan tier ones.

 

EDIT: other than the Tesla p100 are there any cards with greater DP performance than the GK110 cards?

What I think: 

 

They have just made a gaming focused GPU, and charged $1200. So the nvidia fanboys cannot defend this card. It is an overpriced gaming card. For double the cost of the gtx 1080, you get ~%30 more performance. 

Question (curious)

The Radeon Pro Duo is a "prosumer" card and they're saying the Titan is gamer card. Would the Radeon card be better to buy then "this gen" Titan? To get the double precision or something that people want? Is 16 TFLOPS better than 11?

If you need DP, yes AMD cards are the ones to get, although even Fiji has had its DP compute cut to some extent. Hawaii has more DP compute than Fiji, although if you simply want a top "prosumer" card the Pro Duo is the one to get out of the two then.
