r9 390 is better (in most cases). Only reasons to choose 970: 

• If power consumption matters to you for whatever reason
• If the games you play all favor Nvidia

Also, yes, the x makes a difference. For AMD cards the X basically means it is a fully unlocked GPU (I don't mean fully overclockable, I mean that it has all the stream processors that the architecture allows). Basically the 390x has all 2816 stream processors, while the 390 is a slightly cut down 390x with only 2536 stream processors (I think).

X just means it has all the stream processors, while if it doesn't it just means it has slightly less than the X version.

390vs970 the average gain is around 5% ish, though the higher up you go with the resolution the greater the gap is.

For 390x vs 390 it depends on the game and if the stream processors really make a difference. The 390x has a little more than 10% more stream processors, so I'd probably say on average you would see around a 10% performance gain.

I personally don't really think so, unless you are really gunning for a 400 dollar GPU. Afterall, you are essentially paying 30% more on your GPU for 10% more performance.

Of course, if you pit it relative to you whole system (say your system costs 1000 dollars) you'd be paying 10% more on your system for 10% more performance. So it really is up to you.

I have 1386 dollars to spend! Could you make me a build that you believe would run Minecraft, rocket league, the division, gta v and just cause 3 at max setting 60fps?

i had the all 3 of the gpu before 970 390 and 390x i was upgrading non stop as i got the chance of doing so without spending much money by luck so i want to try it all. i would say 390 is the best bet it is slightly faster than 970 and slightly slower than 390x but 390 is the best bang for the buck sweet spot imo. 

 

So yes, take the 390 you won't regret it. 

And btw, 390x only benefits from some game it have higher performance even compare to 980 but i really don't know the reason why so i don't recommend hoping future game are build in such way that 980 is weaker than 390x.

I would say get the r9 390 overall it is one of the best price to performance gpus and compared to the 390x costs a significant amount less and only losses a small amount of performance. The 970 has the issue with the 3.5 gb + 0.5 gb which pretty much in triple a titles running higher than 1080p will hurt performance.

Basically 1-2 frames. I personally don't think that 1-2 frames is worth the extra 20-30.

It's $200 for more a gain of ~5-6 fps in CERTAIN. Games. So not every game will benefit from it. Also, one 390x will not use the entire 8gb. It doesn't have the horsepower to. However, cfx 390x will be able to use the 8b to its fullest potential. I can personally attest to that

970 scales well at 1080p when it comes to value for money, and power consumption. If you go higher on resolutions, the extra Video memory that ATI has proves useful. 

If you are going to use a 1080p display, go with a 970. If you plan on going higher in your screen resolution, go with the 390x. 

Also, there is no straight comparison, as there is a huge price difference between them.

Heyy! Im looking for a GPU to play minecraft with shaders, gta v just cause 3 and rocket league with. I want to play minecraft with shaders and all the other games high setting 60 fps!

Whats the cheapest card that will do me well? it will be paired with a  skylake processor and 16gb ram.
