But how relevant are they to the average PC users experience? That's my point: They won't disappear entirely, but the alternatives are good enough that most people won't bother with them.

My point is, what you've been saying has been the norm for so long now that it's not even worth noting. Most households don't even need desktops; they're perfectly fine with just a tablet to check email and stuff. However, dedicated devices like video cards, sound cards and so on are going to be around as long as there is a demand for it.

 

We already see video cards being embedded in laptops and mobile device's motherboards if it's not already being handled by the CPU/iGPU mainly. It's been that way for years, yet people are still buying dedicated video cards not only for gaming but for other compute purposes. Gaming cards aren't relevant to average users yet they're still around and people are buying them.

 

Sooo, dedicated devices like that aren't going anywhere.

As much as I enjoy the feeling of holding a new GPU, it definitely feels like we're going to see them go the way of sound cards or disc drives in the next 10 years.

Not at all PC gaming would need to die as well as pretty much every industry that depends on GPU's for work.

Not to mention that GPU's are replacing CPU's for compute applications, servers, and super computers.

And Nvidia is doing very well with the 900 series having record high sales in the high end.

GPU's aren't going anywhere for a looong time if anything they'll become more relevant while CPU's might fade away or may become integrated into the GPU.

We have known that nvidia has a bigger market share for YEARS now.

AMD stills packs a huge punch in the <300 dollar market so you shouldn't complain.

For example nvidia has no decent alternative to the r9 270 , the only thing that comes close is the gtx 660 which pales

in speed and OC capability compared to 270 and 270x cards.

The last thing you want is a nvidia owned monopoly because that means paying more for your nvidia cards.

Ya, if AMD went bust then Nvidia could jack up prices....same as Intel if AMD's CPU line went out.

But 270X is more a equivalent to a GTX 660-670.

Sure, lots of people use the iGPU.  ( Business computers et cetera.)  But for gaming people have used traditional video cards.  Mac's and consoles both had them.  Consoles have APU's, how long until Mac's don't come with a GPU either??  How long until mid range builds don't contain GPU's?  3 years?  Maybe 4?  In 10 years I wouldn't be surprised if GPU's weren't strictly the realm of the high end market.

Guys this isnt funny. PC gaming as we know it can flop if AMD flops. No competition means there is no excuse for Nvidia to pull something (stupid) like make all GPU's cost a fortune. 

We are already seeing proof of them pulling something like this (*Cough* titan Z for $3000)

I strongly encourage people to support AMD even if they dont have the better product. They cant make good products if they dont profit. People need to just suck-it-up and buy their GPU's simply to support them and keep them alive for the competition. Not saying we all have to become fanboys, we just need them to survive in order to keep PC gaming somewhat cost effective and alive.

I'm pretty sure Intel and NVIDIA want AMD alive, whether or not their products are sub par. Intel has gotten away with marginal improvements since Sandy Bridge, and NVIDIA is pricing their Titans for quite the premium rather than making them extremely competitive. I'm not saying the 290X isn't phenomenal, especially at the occasional sub-$300 pricing, but if NVIDIA and Intel could crush AMD without repercussion, I'm certain it would have been done.

Never gonna buy Nvidia cards after Fermi....they are like jacking up prices now imo.

Maxwell and Kepler=Focused on Power Consumption, something that i don't really care about.

Also, i will never use any of Nvidia features anyway......like shadowplay or gamestream because i never use those application that would require those Nvidia features. 

I care about price to performance.....and that's why i would choose a R9 290 over a GTX 970 because similar performance yet way cheaper(around 100 bucks).

For all those complaining about heat output on AMD cards.....some R9 290 cards run cooler than a GTX 780.....

Fun Fact: My Gaming PC almost had a GTX 760, but i decided on a R9 270X to save some money. 

 

What those graphs don't show is the noise level required to get those temperatures. Anandtech usually include noise levels graphs right after temperature and power consumption graphs which you failed to include, possibly because you are trying to paint a biased argument. OTOH, aftermarket coolers tend to be more quiet but they can still be loud depending on the fan curves and how much the manufacturer prioritized temps over noise.
