Why wait for USB 3.1 ?  The Atom is more than fast enough for basic computing.  You're not going to be gaming with a stick-PC anyway

It'd miss their target consumer base though. Part of getting PC everywhere, is allowing the average Joe to plug this device in their TV or monitor. USB C is a bit cutting edge and maybe even out of site for some.

Seemed good until I saw the price.

With those specs (Atom) it should be ~100 dollars or less.

Until a better alternative comes along for that price, nope. It's perfectly appropriate.

USB C is a connector, USB 3.1 is a USB revision. 

 

The full size USB connector (USB-A I believe) can still utilize the full capabilities of USB 3.1 because it is backwards compatible with 3.0.

 

But I understand your point. I just get ahead of myself wanting more power sometimes.

I have the Chinese one that surfaced late last year the Meegopad t01. From what i have read so far they are identical. Steam streaming 720p over a usb eathernet connection works fine. the thing struggels pretty hard at 1080 though.

 

Thing was a steal only cost 79 after the refund I got for them sending the wrong version (16Gb instead of 32; That leaves a 10Gb c drive since the WIM inage takes up a 4GB partition. Needless to say everything gets installed on the micro SD card.)

 

If anyone wants me to try something on it just ask. also if anyone knows if the official one comes with better wifi , please mention it. (kind of doubt it as the WiFi on this one is Intel)

I haven't slept well but I will try and sumup the main points I could recall.

Doesnt include any input device so after adding that cost in you are paying more for HPs blue mini PC thing whos name I cant recall (which from what I remember is a more capable machine)

 

struggles using bluetooth and wifi at the same time with bluetooth constantly being dropped.

struggles with USB hubs 

can throw hissyfits with some usb stuff plugged in refusing to boot unless the device is removed

unable to manage some pretty low end games like hotline miami and nidhog

steam steaming would lock the device up on occasion

Ya the steam streaming is bad over wifi if bluetooth is on; works fine for 720 with it off.

Inputs would of been a problem if I didn't have so many wireless keyboards & mice

WiFi and Bluetooth stomp on each other but I never had my Bluetooth drop just my WiFi speeds crash to ~2MB/s max From about 10MB/s(still pretty bad seeing as my laptop pulls from my NAS at ~ 25MB)

Mine doesn't mind USB hubs as long as their powered.

never had the USB stuff refusing to boot issue; then again i properly set things up in the UEFI.

only games i played naively where Trine and Cthulhu saves the world; both worked fine at 720.

I didn't have any steam lockups, but I did need too use a USB Ethernet adapter or external WiFi stick to get the bandwidth required; was able to stream Batman: Arkham Origins too work.

External Hdds would need to run off of a powered hub.

1080P you tube runs fine if its the only thing up, with multiple things running it starts to stutter. 720 runs fine regardless. For some reason 1080p hardware video acceleration wont work; that might be an issue because its a Chinese copy or it might be an issue with all of them. Ill check too see if there are driver updates I can apply to see if it improves.

Seems everyone is coming out with their little TV dongles.

 

This would be cool for schools that just need computers for simple tasks like word processing etc.  Just buy a monitor with a USB port and plug it in.

I can't but feel this is a missed opportunity for Intel to deliver a great product

the "compute stick" lacks in terms of compute power and adding insult to injury, the HW is fairly outdated and outclassed

there should've been 802.11ac, more RAM and USB3 port; even a LAN port

SO I updated the drivers with the intel driver update utility. 1080p playback got worse. like a lot worse. it's not dropping frames but its playing them out of order. like frame: 1,3,2,4,6,5,7,8,10,9  very strange again only in browsers. Ill try updating them again when intel unlocks the official compute stick drivers; right now I'm using the bay trail mobile drivers which may be different.

that said, I updated the WiFi driver and the onboard WiFi is doing a touch better but still not really acceptable when Bluetooth is running.

Ok so Refreshed the device and installed the Graphics driver for my Tablet and it plays 1080P video everywhere just fine now. Steam streaming at 1080p still is a less than awesome experience. (starts off strong then it overheats, it looks like the official one has a fan on it so that may not be a problem on that one). But it only works well if i use an Ethernet USB adapter or an AC WiFi stick as the 80211.n is more than a touch laggy at 1080 30FPS.

 

Also the WiFi on the stick works a lot better with my new router (TP-LINK Archer C7 v2) over the my old one(FIOS "Advanced WiFi Router" going from 20Mb/s to over 40Mb/s but still worse than a cheap generic N lite 802.11n USB at over 60Mb/s that did not change performance between routers. (Both routers where being used on the least populated 2.4ghz channel in the area)

Maybe you should mod it, add a heatsink and fan
