lol its hard to get a perfect card.

 

lol i like your signature, happened to me once and learned the hardway!

 

im sorry mate i never had a chance to own a r9 cards so i cant give my opinion my last card was gtx 570, been using nvidia cards since 9800gt and imo r9 cards are best bang for the buck but they run a tad bit hot.

 

wow 480? that thing is a power hungry monster.how long did u have it though ?

My 980 (which is basically a 970 with more cuda cores AFIA) doesn't whine much, for some reason it whines when I close Heaven but I don't hear it whine often...  It's just luck really.

 

Also, a little tip. Don't use FurMark to test stability, just because it's stable in FurMark it doesn't mean that it will be stable doing other things. I found that out when I was overclocking my card, got the memory to something stupid like (I don't remember the exact figure) 8.7GHz (effective obviously), ran fine in FurMark, went to test it in Heaven and it crashed almost instantly.

Coil whine when closing heaven happens every time. I have ran the test on GTX760s, GTX970, GTX770, GTX780, GTX780ti. All make coil whine when closing it. Other then that they are silent.

I had very audible coil whine on both of my 970s, and now they're silent. It wasn't my psu's fault, otherwise it wouldn't have "sorted" itself out after 3 months because my psu has been in my system for over 2 years.

I only experience "Coil Whine" when i hit 1000 FPS on loading screen. thats about it. never while gaming or stress test or benchmarking.

My Asus strix is dead silent running Skyrim with about 40+ mods installed, everything turned up to maximum. Also it never goes over half temperature.

 

running stock clocks, Have yet to see any need to overclock it.

Ketchup is better than mustard.

GUI is better than Command Line Interface.

Dubs are better than subs

I have an h440 so its possible that some of the whine is mitigated by the case? I just got back into building pcs so I'm like a kid in a candy store for all this stuff.  It all looks really cool and really good to me! If I have to pay for fries, I want my jelly beans raw dammit!

Mine hasn't made a peep. Half the time the fans are barely spinning.

 

Even with modded skyrim the temp hasn't ever gone about 60c. Granted it's winter here and I keep my window open.

Like the mcsame. gtx 980, and no coil whine. unlike the mcsame. no coil whine....ever.  I'm running an ax 1500i as my PSU, and the thing is a malfunctioning piece of doodoo. but when I eventually get power supplied to a component I haven't had a repeat problem...yet

Coil whine goes away after 2 months.  problem solved.

adapted to 970 right after release, seeing constant reduction of coilwhine since like two weeks or such

EVGA ACX2.0 user chiming in.

Mine has terrible coil whine. The type of whine clearly audible across the room over 7 case fans.

 

Happens at 60 FPS, so the *people who think V-sync is the fix all for people, it isn't. My monitor is 144hz, so even then, it isn't a solution.

 

*I don't know why, but every forum I've at for solutions has had at least one person going "It's normal", "It's because it's running at 9001fps, use v-sync", "it will go away in 1week-3months", and/or "it's your PSU". All are sometimes true, but all do not necessarily apply to the number of complaints about the GTX 970. Also, having a high-pitched whine come with your card that may go away after a month or two isn't (in my opinion) acceptable for a GPU I payed $350 for.

"Normandy" i7 4790K - GTX 970 - Phantom 410 (Gun metal) - Z97 Extreme4 (asrock) - 128GB Crucial SSD - 1TB WD HDD - H60 Refurb. - 7 case fans | G710+ Keyboard, G230 Headset, Acer GN246HL Monitor.

Quick thoughts on system: I7 is extremely quick and I'm glad I spent the extra for hyper-threading. I regret my decision to get the GTX 970, it has horrible coil whine. There isn't any excuse for this terrible whine I and others are having. I HIGHLY recommend a 144hz monitor. Future Improvements/upgrades: Rubber fan mounts, basic speakers, more ram (for a total of 16gb), replace GPU.

144hz is love. 144hz is life. I like to submit unfinished posts then do about 20 edits. I like the Night Theme too.
