Nvidia has patented a new cooling fan to be used in combination with the heat sinks of the upcoming GeForce GTX series video cards. It is a particular turbofan that combines the benefits of axial fans with those of the radial fans.

The block is designed to maximize the intake air vertical and horizontal accelerate the flow to the radiator fins, ensuring lower temperatures (GPU) and quieter than current turbine fans. We can consider it as a system similar to RADAX FAN MSI with a difference: the solution favors the MSI component "axial" of the fan while the Nvidia tip on the "radial".

I must say that even if I'm not interested in reference cards, Nvidia is actually doing a good work with their latest cards. Now, I'm not expert in this area, but I hope it turns out good.

All they did was put a CPU fan design on top of an electric shop fan blade design. Not really patent worthy.

*cough* as an engineer, a normal axial fan will create incidental airflow at the tips anyway so the whole thing is pure marketing, (nvidias just trying to cash in on it) a similar thing was done with the gtx460 "cyclone", (its a friggin' radial heatsink guys, no patents available here either).

also as far as "centrally mounted for dual gpu's go" a normal centrifugal design like seen on the 6990 is the best route as it blows air out perpendicular to the axis of the fan, an axial design as seen on the gtx295/590/690/titan z is very poor, while axial fans are better for moving air, when the air path is blocked by something like....a PCB the airflow drops to sweet F.A.
only reasons 6990's ran loud and hot is because amd's fans blade pitch is wrong and because it was 40nm, amd later made a GCN 28nm dual gpu 7990 with bigger fans that made it run silent and cool.....and nobody gave a sh*t :angry:.
put a gtx titan-esque centrifugal fan inbetween 2x gk110 cores/290's and you'll have much better cooling,

oh and dual gpu is dead for the most part anyway, 1 single big gpu with its own heatsink is better than 2 smaller ones with 2 heatsinks, what would be better a dual gpu card made from 2x7850's or 1xr9-290 (specs would be the same)

This sort of fan will have to be positioned in the middle of the card, so this is possibly a dual-GPU graphics card cooler.

I would agree that this patent is a load of horse shit but I would imagine Nvidia has a specific blade layout and angle and shape to them so they are better in some way. Like Noctua's fans how they are shaped and curved differently so they perform better. I could be wrong though.
