27" @ 1080p

fixME

Many people are critical about 27" and 1080p resolution.  They pixel density is bad and the overall quality is poor.

Who actually owns one?

I own a 22" Samsung 1680x1050 TN and I love this screen.

I want a larger monitor, but 1440p is very expensive.  It would also be taxing on a 7870 XT if I wanted to play on ultra settings.

I own a AOC 27" and I would have to say it's perfectly fine (On the edge of becoming pixelated).... And the 7870 XT runs amazing on 1080p (Put together a PC for a friend running a Saphire 7870XT and was running ArmA 3 at max settings... Most of the time 30+ FPS, sometimes lower; Have to blame the view distance though).

there's no point in asking the internet.  it's something you have to try yourself.

remember: many people that need glasses don't wear it (and won't admit they need them) and everyone has different monitor positions (how deep your desk is)

I have an Asus VG278 27"  1920x1080 120hz 3D monitor and I've got to say when I game it's completely fine I don't notice them at all, but when it comes to still images like my desktop background or a webpage I notice the pixels a bit and it's somewhat annoys me but I wear glasses so I notice alot of small details that might not bother anyone else. So if you're just going to game I'd say it's totally fine.  ^_^

That's true tbc.  However a lot of the popular monitors online don't seem to be in the store near me - ie. Future Shop.  I always buy my parts online and monitors is not something I change often.

Never heard of the brand AOC.

According to my calculations the pixel density would be only 4% lower than your current monitor. So if you're ok with your existing monitor I doubt you will have an issue. Obviously 1440p would look great but the bigger problem is that your 7870xt would not be able to handle it. You'd want a  7970 at least so your entire gaming hardware budget goes up.

I have an Asus VE278Q 27" 1080p and an Asus VE247H 24" 1080p.  I really regret getting the 27" as it is noticeably lower quality than a 24" at 1080p.  I would advise you to get a 24" monitor for 1080p and below, anything above 24" should be more than 1080p imo.

Hi Guy's,

Tagging on the end of this discussion, I am in the process of my first build and looking to purchase a new 27" to go with the 2x LG IPS235's that i currently own. Trying to decide between Dell U2713HM and Asus PB278Q but the main question at this time is.......

Can I run these off HDMI @ 1080P until the new system is complete ??

Here is the pixel density of different screen sizes according to pixeldensitycalculator.com

22` with res. 1680 by 1050 = 90.05 PPI (pixels per inch?)

24` with res. 1920 by 1080 = 91.79 PPI

27` with res. 1920 by 1080 = 81.59 PPI

27` with res. 2560 by 1440 = 108.79 PPI

30` with 4k res (3840 by 2160) = 146.86 PPI

You have to be more specific. If you mean 2x LG IPS235  off HDMI @1080p, then sure, HDMI fully supports 1080p signal, but 60Hz or lower. Those two mentioned 27" also support HDMI input, but i hardly recommend using DVI-D for those, since the resolution might reduce refresh rate (depends on revision of cable, I didn't read that much about HDMI). Everything pretty much comes down to one question: Does your card have enough HDMI outputs?

27" 1080p monitors have atrocious pixel densities, I've seen a few. If you're on a budget, get a smaller monitor.

You might be able to, but check if your current graphics card can use a 3 monitor setup

That doesn't seem that bad.

24" isn't that much bigger than my 22".  Seeing how its' also 16:10 vs 16:9.

I think my current monitor looks great.

I have one, and you cant tell if you sit 3+ feet away from your Monitor, so unless you have no desk space or like to sit really close to your monitor 27" @ 1080p is fine, Most people who scrutanize the pixel density do so from way to close to the monitor and not at what would be the realistic sitting distance of the monitor.

I have the Phillips 273ELH, I sit about 70cm away from it gaming, 1m when relaxing in my chair.

I have always sat close to monitors, but this one is fine to use, not uncomfortable at all. Icons are not too big or anything, text is easy to read over a white background, no bleeding colours at all.

The whites on this monitor are bright, you may have to tweak brightness and colours when you set one up as I had to for saturation colour was set to 30% out of the box

The controls on the monitor itself are easy to use, a simple touch panel, not buttons, 3 presets for brightness and colours one of them you customize yourself.

http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/14001-how-to-run-higher-than-the-maximum-resolutions-on-your-display/?p=160899

^this is a thread that allowed me to run the display @ 2560x1440p for my games and 1080p for the desktop, it isnt something that only my monitor can do, all monitors can do this, its a graphics card thing, Nvidia and Ati, however only ATI is covered in this one. I'm surprised no one has done the Nvidia equivalent on the forums yet. But I thought I'd add this here for all to see. 1080p panel yet games on using 2560x1440p rendering IQ.< Performance hit included.

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

I have a Asus PB278Q 27" 1440p monitor. I am not sure if it's really worth double the price of a 27" 1080p monitor. Here is why:

I had a problem when I first got it that it was running really laggy when playing BO2. I didn't look laggy but it felt horribly laggy. I was missing shots wholesale. When i changed the resolution to native res to 1080p it played a lot better. The point of this story is I was used to playing with a 27" 1080p monitor. To be honest I couldn't notice a difference in picture quality when playing games or watching movies. Only real difference is desktop real estate is way better on the 1440p monitor and everything just looks a bit nicer. Nothing major though and not worth double the price.

One thing though and maybe someone else can clear this up. Does a 27" 1440p monitor set to 1080p resolution look much different than a 27" 1080p monitor? The 1440p monitor has the extra physical pixels but are they being used?

I should also point out that I bought a crappy second hand 22" TN panel monitor (for fps games only) because its way better for playing games on than a IPS/PLS monitor. The accuracy difference between the two monitors is surprising. Some people say IPS/PLS is fine for gaming but for me, it really wasn't. (I am assuming its the IPS/PLS panel that is making it bad for gaming but I'm not 100% sure)
