OMG can someone provide a rationale for this???

LjjlijJ

Why does fortnite require 80+ GB of disk space???

Isn't there just the one map???

Witcher 3 requires ~50GB and MHWI require only ~47GB! Why 82GB for a single map game???

I can't wrap my head around this!

Gotta save those silly dances somewhere.

Plus music usually makes a large impact on game size, so perhaps they are using a lot of tracks with high quality or something?

Im pretty sure, like Warzone, you are downloading the entire game, but getting the free side of the software only.  If you buy Fortnite then you get the balance of the software unlocked.

Yeah, the game may be less compressed, to make game patching easier (overwrite parts of files in place, if there's files with compressed sections it makes it harder to make replacements in the big files)

No or less compression also makes the game load faster on shitty pcs or lets them stream from drive if the computer has little amount of ram to cache content.

Just for fun or as experiment, you could try to right click on the game folder , select Properties, and check the box "Compress to save disk space" and wait until it's done.

That NTFS compression can compress and decompress in near real time (you won't notice it really) and reduce disk space up to 50% ... if the files can be compressed, you get less disk space used. If they don't compress, files remain uncompressed.

I wish people talking about "uncompressed" data in a game knew what they were talking about. Fortnite has a lot of items, a lot of music, but a lot of the audio is compressed in the Opus codec, if memory serves.

I do think Fortnite in its Battle Royale state downloads most of the game period, so that also likely inflates file sizes considerably.
