Planning to upgrade my old pc

Planning to upgrade my old thinkcentre m58 pc with 8gb of ram and a new cpu and also add a gpu. Can i ask what type of cpu and gpu to upgrade the pc to play games like cs:go or league of legends and is intel q9550 enough?

My pc specs:

Lenovo Panda L-IQ45 mobo

LGA775 socket

Intel Core2 Duo E8400

2gb ram

240watt psu

the cheapest core 2 quad you can get is the best option. The Q6600 is usually really cheap, and the clock speed difference is not that large from the Q9550, often coming in at only a quarter the price.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 10 and Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

How many watts do I needATX 3.0 & PCIe 5.0 spec, PSU misconceptions, protections explainedgroup reg is bad

Where do you live and how much can you spend... Depending on that, you may get more performance per $ doing an entirely new build, something like a used 1060+i5 7400...

The q9500 is a little bit cheaper tho but not a huge gap between the q9550 just with the cache but will it support the socket?

I think so too upgrading to ryzen setup would be cheaper but here it's not so im planning to just upgrade it.

I did a quick Google search of the motherboard and saw some support for core 2 quad processors, and since your current core 2 duo is 1333 bus then that seems like any CPU will work with that motherboard.

Still, I advise against spending more than $10 on a platform that old.

To be fair if he gets a 1650 and a q6600 he's going to be fine for esports titles..

Although when it comes to a core 2 CPU, a GTX 1050 is the most i'd recommend. When testing with my own Q6600, the 1050 ti started to have some diminishing returns on performance.

Same, i don't want to spend too much. I just wanna use it as a main pc for a while until i can build a new setup. Thanks for the response.

And the 1050 ti needs external power, not gonna trust his sketchy oem 240w psu...

1650 is the best that rig can handle though, and it's a solid card overall, so when he upgrades to something like a Ryzen 3100 later on, that's still a respectable card. It handedly beats the 1050 with identical power consumption

I'm upgrading my psu too and planning next to upgrade to a ryzen 3 setup

If you're upgrading the PSU just do a new build. OEM desktops often use proprietary motherboard connectors and your power supply may be incompatible. You can also get a way better card than a GTX 1650 - the only reason we're recommending it is because your current power supply won't handle anything else...

Right now, I would get-

Q6600 - very cheap, I've seen it for $4 /($7 - $3 new user coupon) on Aliexpress, shipping varies.
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/2037957711.html

1x4gb DDR2 RAM - another $4 or $5 for a 1x4gb stick. If you have a single 2gb stick this will get you to 6gb total.

An SSD - because you can just move it to your new PC when you upgrade, it doesn't matter. Get the cheapest 500gb SATA 2.5" SSD you can find, probably a WD Green, around $50.

And get the GTX 1650... Which will set you back another $150, guessing $100 used.

So you're looking at $160-$210 for this upgrade... Also this way when you upgrade to Ryzen you just buy a new CPU, motherboard, RAM, and PSU - your GPU and SSD are already there.

Or spend $400 and build from scratch and get a way better PC, but at a higher cost.

Q6600 + any supported GPU that does not need a power supply will probably do. 😉 (edit if said GPU is faster than GT 9800)

Honestly if you spend $350 you could build a PC around an Athlon 3000G and an RX 570... I would just do that and upgrade the CPU to one of the upcoming Ryzen 4000 chips when they arrive. There would be an upgrade path at least.

If it's a half height slot you'll need the low profile 1650... Coincidentally it's the fastest card that doesn't need extra power and also the fastest card available in a low profile form factor...
