Core 2 Quad Q9400s reaching 85 degrees celcius under load.

Super Computing

I just installed a core 2 Quad Q9400s processor I bought second hand. I am running it on the stock intel cooler, and when running a stress test, the cpu reaches 85 degrees celcius and sits in the 80s. I used cooler master thermal paste which I think is a pretty well known brand. At idle it sits in the low 50s. Is this ok? Did I do something wrong.

nah, that's pretty much what i'd expect with stock coolers

It could be your stock cooler is a 65w tdp one which are designed for core 2 duos. Could you post a picture of the cooler?

"stock intel cooler"

That's what's wrong, not anything you did. Intel's stock coolers aren't known for running cool and quiet. If you applied paste properly and the cooler is solidly on, that's the best you can do. What stress test BTW? My 5820K is on water, it'll still hit 80C in something like Prime95, in other tests or real world use it doesn't really break 60C.

I am running linux, I use stress-ng, select the option to load all 4 cores and then use psensor to monitor temps.

Yeah that's a teeny tiny cooler for smolboye CPUs, you're running a high end Core 2 Quad, thus the overheating. Here's the one I use on my X5675, it's a beefier stock cooler with a copper core and the CPU still hits the high 50s to 60s when it's just under normal load:

Also lol the northbridge cooler on this mobo is as tall as the CPU cooler with fan.

Yeah that's about the best you can expect with that cooler for the chip. That CPU's Tcase temp is 71.4°C so I'd personally invest in a better cooler but to each their own. If you don't plan on running it at 100% all the time it's probably fine.

As others have said, underspecd cooler, if you can just grab a 212 Evo and be done with it, cheap and cheerful.

For now you can try to control voltages or even undervolt it.

  • 1 month later...

I picked up a Cooler Master TX3 Evo, had it face right at the exhaust fan and temps dropped to mid 30s under full load. In degress celcius*

Edit: System lockups started occuring, I reseated the cpu and the lockups stopped, however the temps went up to 60c max under load, maybe the 30c was a faulty reading? Who knows

I would have fiddled with the voltages, but i have little experience in that field. But thanks for the help guys.
