[CluelessBuilds] Fragile Investment - Glas, Chrome and only the thiccest Rads

Recommended Posts

Posted · Original PosterOP

alright so since this is finally actually happening i thought i might as well start a topic on it.

im planning this thing for literally years now and lets say plans have changed somewhat so now im back to the "basics" - but still fancy as fuck :D

20190911_225128.thumb.jpg.839811d0557e8ef8b1b9112059ccede6.jpg

so heres the juice:

i7 7700k

1080 Ti

16 GB G.skill RGB Ram

Asus z270i mitx

then some ssds and hdds and a corsair sf600 left over from the old planned build (tecnically i wouldnt need sfx anymore but meh .. does the job)

Lian Li PC o11 dynamic (with a couple of mods)

ek supremecy evo full nickel (x99 block converted to 115x)

ek gpu block

ek xres 100 combo paired with an aqua computer d5 pump

360 x 80mm tick alphacool monsta in the bottom

360 x 60mm tick alphacool ut60 in the top

360 x 45mm tick alphacool xt45 in the back

all noctua ippc nf12

all alphacool fittings since they are the only once that fit because.....

borosilicatglas tubing in the front and soft in the back

i have almost all the parts now and theres only time and work left to do.

expect i thought since its gonna be impossible to access later i might as well populate all the m.2 slots now and get another ssd for the back of the board

and ohh of course eks cryofuel ill order with that ...and a filler bottle :P

heres some rough renders of the layout

Spoiler

image.png.73a5825ea60db90edf96207ed97abc60.pngimage.png.3cab07cef5ae2311a1878d56318a7778.pngimage.png.34d7beba1f5d57b7459496aca452650b.pngimage.png.2ab49a2d28d4d8ad046c00b2fdf6bd2b.png

as you can see ill box off the top and bottom rad with holes for fans and fittings of course

then the back also gets an aluminium cover plate to make it a bit shinier

the pump goes in the back

and on top ill cut out a bit to fit my 5 1/4" drive cage

also quick disconnects out back (looped back around for now) for possible future external cooling (i know its redicoulus but i might try for passive while idle at some point)

heres some hastely taken pics i had lying around. now that i have a topic ill get you better ones as i go along

Spoiler

Is it just me or have you put thermal pads on places where it doesn't specify on the manual?.

I guess the VCore caps and memory VRM get some cooling too :D. The latter has thermal pads on the FE cooler anyway, if I recall this correctly. Because the caps are pretty much the same height as the MOSFETs, the 1mm pad likely won't cause damage, it's just as unnecessy as the thermal pad on the non-existent 12th memory chip on your correct application.

I don't know man....looks to me like heights will change especially with the pads on the right of the memory modules (memory VRM?). Yes, the 12th non-existing memory chip doesn't need cooling, but at least for that one there is definite change of height. After our last encounter with dodgy thermal pad placement from another user, I just want to minimize potential complications 😉

yes.

it only costs 35 bucks and they test it before and after. also in the extreme unlikely case they should brick it. theyll replace it. ive yet to find such a great offer anywhere.

and then when i add up what it would cost to buy the der8auer delid tool and the thermal grizzly stuff plus the risk of me messing up because i have never done it.

35 bucks is well worth it to me.

soohhh ...i just ordered a  1tb corsair mp510 since apparently it somehow has better performance than even the samsung stuff and at a much better price too. also im not sure how the hell they can promise so much more tbw. anyway i thought since im not gonna be able to access the back m.2 on my board later i might as well just pouplate it now.

really freaking weir how i paid the same price for my 250 gb samsung 840 way back when. and now i can get 1tb of nvme for that.

anyway ... progress on the case has been going slow. which is really annoying to me since i got it all lying around ready to go but i do need to mod the case slightly. well not that slightly actually and since i dont like doing that i procrastinate as fuck.

made the first cuts on the top the day before yesterday and somehow i thought this flimsy ass thin piece of sheet metal would cut much easier. especially with that diamond cut wheel on my dremel. i must be doing something wrong.

yeah so thats where ill start with that top cutout for the hotswap drive bay.

image.png.7d41528a5fb3d0ea17294e1e7788c483.png

and i can already tell it not gonna be pretty but im doing my best and if i screw it up at least you wont be able to see it with the top cover on :D

oh and i forgot about the temp sensor so i ordered one. just because the pump from aquacomputer allow for connecting one so i will

alright so now i went and took the whole thing to my parents where i can work on it more easily in my dads workshop.

so i got the hotswap drive cage mounted as you can see.

the 2 quick disconnects with their respective pass throughs are mounted on the back.

i also did some minor cutouts to make the top and back rad fit mor comfortably.

drilled some wholes through the bottom of the mobo holding back plate for mounting the pump on the back.

and then measuered up the aluminium sheet,, cut it to length. bent it (although well see how good a job i did with that when i finally remove the protective film on the aluminium), and drilled 4 wholes in theres so the mobo standoffs can fit through.

now for the problems.

i have no idea how to mark on the alu where exactly the fan cutouts need to go.

same will be a problem for the top and bottom rad

since i made my cover plate flat, i now need a 17mm fan mount standoff like an extension or a tunnel you know. to close the gap between the fan and the alu. ready to buy onces are all 20mm and expensive as hell so im going to ask a colleague of mine who apparently has a 3d printer to print me 3 adapeter plate thingys for the fans.

Spoiler

random thought i need to double check: if i can pull the alu cover plate forward enough to fit 2 fand double stacked so 2x25mm then i could just get the cheapest shit fans for like a buck each and remove the inner fan. that would be the cheapest and fastest way to do this. im gonna have to measure again and think about this some more.

also the bottom and top rad covers should actually be pretty simple to mark i realized since im using clear plexi i can just set a compass at the center of the fan/s and draw the circle to cut out. and then when all done im gonna paint them gloss black. just the back is still problematic.

soohhh ...i just ordered a  1tb corsair mp510 since apparently it somehow has better performance than even the samsung stuff and at a much better price too. also im not sure how the hell they can promise so much more tbw. anyway i thought since im not gonna be able to access the back m.2 on my board later i might as well just pouplate it now.

really freaking weir how i paid the same price for my 250 gb samsung 840 way back when. and now i can get 1tb of nvme for that.

anyway ... progress on the case has been going slow. which is really annoying to me since i got it all lying around ready to go but i do need to mod the case slightly. well not that slightly actually and since i dont like doing that i procrastinate as fuck.

made the first cuts on the top the day before yesterday and somehow i thought this flimsy ass thin piece of sheet metal would cut much easier. especially with that diamond cut wheel on my dremel. i must be doing something wrong.

yeah so thats where ill start with that top cutout for the hotswap drive bay.

and i can already tell it not gonna be pretty but im doing my best and if i screw it up at least you wont be able to see it with the top cover on :D

oh and i forgot about the temp sensor so i ordered one. just because the pump from aquacomputer allow for connecting one so i will

i feel your pain on paying that much back then! i paid like 540 or so on my samsung 950 pro 512gb nvme,at the time it was the fastest drive availible soo expensive! then like a month later the 960 pro's came out argh!!
