Windows Defender Antivirus comes to macOS as Microsoft Defender ATP

I use ESET internet security, it's not bad.

Actually no adblocker is going to protect you from a social engineered exploit on social media.

It's like you have 5 holes in your boat and you think plugging one is enough.  Defender may not be the best of the best but as has been pointed out its better than the mac offering and free.

The excuse of "macs don't get viruses" I guess? Having a firewall and some kind of anti malware is better than thinking it won't affect you.

You could just have some bulkheads like a normal person. But a bulkhead isn’t an antivirus. 

 

In the context of a boat, an antivirus is more like bilge pumps and damage control crews. 

 

But the best best way to avoid sinking is to just never get into a collision.

even the safest of captains have things out side of their control. maybe an uncharted reef, another smaller vessel might impact them, they might be snuck up on by pirates who forcefully drive holes into the hull

True. But that’s why I keep Maleware bytes installed. But I don’t let it launch on startup and it’s the free version so it doesn’t do real time protection. 

 

I just dont belive its worth giving up any system resources.

Most of these things are pretty impossible. It’s mostly if you can’t drive a boat or your boat breaks. Always keep an EPIRB and flares, marine radio, all standard. And a bottle of whiskey, because you aren’t drinking and driving you are sailing.

 

Like it doesn’t help your metaphor, but if it helps, boats do already have holes and are designed to leak into the bilge, which is then pumped out.

 

[Edit] Macs especially have lots of holes, but no pump.

I'd wager that many modern AVs take up limited amounts of resources apart from some rogue ones. 

 

And I'm pretty damn sure that Apple software engineers have coded macOS in a way that allows the OS to intelligently manage system resources without direct user commands

Even if I found an antivirus with free real time protection, I still wouldn’t use it. 

 

Its just not something that concerns me on my Mac.

It’s just not something I care enough about. Set it and forget it or not. 

 

I just don’t like antivirus programs. They cause more stress than they save in my experience.

Yes, it's clearly much better to deal with the damage after a virus infection than use a free resources that has a much higher chance of mitigating the infection in the first place.

Yep, it's just physically impossible to get in a car and drive it without insurance.
