Help with cpu upgrade.

Hello, I find that my computer struggle in games recently and wanted to upgrade my cpu. I have seen the new Intel cpu's and wanted to try a intel cpu this time around. I think its hard to choose parts that fit together price wise and makes sense and would like some help. My current cpu has lasted 7 years and I want the new cpu to do the same. I am looking to buy cpu, motherboard, ram, and perhaps cpu cooler if I am unable to "re-use" my current one.

I was thinking of buying a i5 or a i7 of the 9 series(or the new once), and if possible spend (total price) less then 2x of the price of the cpu itself if that is possible. What do you think I should buy?

Current computer:

  • CPU: Amd FX-8350
  • Motherboard: Gigabyte 990FXA-UD5
  • RAM: 8x2GB DDR3 Clk: 1866MHz
  • GPU: Asus GeForce GTX 1070 8GB Dual
  • Case: Fractal design - Define R4
  • PSU: Fractal design - Newton R2 1000w
  • Cooling: Coolermaster Nepton 140XL, Noctua NF-A14 PWM

You can easily upgrade that to a new i7 for less than 2x the processor.

From a purely gaming perspective, you see an increase in diminishing returns on investment beyond an i5.

Intel still holds top for raw performance in the vast majority of game workloads, but AMD has hit Intel hard with their performance-per-dollar Ryzen series.

The Nepton 140XL supports:

     Intel LGA 2066 / 2011-3 / 2011 / 1366 / 1156 / 1155 / 1151 / 1150 / 775 socket

     AMD® AM4* / AM3+ / AM3 / AM2 / FM2 / FM1 socket

with AM4 needing a replacement bracket which can be sourced directly through Cooler Master

At 1080p on high, the 1070 should be able to handle pretty much any have without issue. But yes, it does someone depend on the game. Many are still single thread and are limited due to single core performance.

I use 2x 1080p60hz screens. I play on one of them only. I play things like Sid meier Civilization, Farming simulator,, a few other simulator games, Xcom, GTA, Space Engineers, Dayz, Mount and blade bannerlord (when it comes out). and many random games. - Thanks Food158 for reminding me.

I usually play on max graphics settings, as currently I get the same FPS regardless of graphic settings usually. I would like to be able to play farming simulator 2025 and civ 8 and gta 7 when they come out, thats why i didnt mention I play latest version of most games.

Well in my country the Ryzen 7 2700 and the i5-9600K is both the same price. (without the other parts). I would not buy anything less than those atleast.

i5-9600K is only a 6 cores 6 thread chip...it will age poorly and it's already maxing out in the more demanding games...i would not recommend you buy that...

How much is an i7-8700 non K?

The i7-8700 non K is priced just in the middle of the i5-9600K and i7-9700K. 8700k/9700k is almost same price.

if you can afford i7-9700K with Z390 motherboard i would do that...otherwise cheap out on i7-8700 with B360 motherboard it's faster than ryzen.

Will a "240" AIO cooler support 140mm fans? I see just a few "280" AIO's. I dont want to use smaller fans than 140mm because of noise.
