As @megaant4 said, check the policies of the company in regards to broken etc. But I'd have to say that the way I've seen most monitors/TVs packaged it would be very rare I would imagine to receive one broken, they have tons of styrofoam protecting them.

Really it doesn't matter that much. You are correct though, only other 16x PCIe cards have to share the 16x bandwidth. If you have a 16x card it won't be affected by the 1x sound card.
Also, currently graphics cards aren't even able to utilise the whole 16x slot, they barely can max out 8x.. The performance difference isn't noticeable.

Hahha. Linus should consider getting a 10 bit monitor to see if he can tell the difference. He did buy a $1K HDMI cable so a 10bit monitor at $5K isn't that bad.
