pythonmegapixel got a reaction from da na in "Name a tech brand" game
I have no idea if this will catch on or not. This is a new game which, similarly to the banning game or "Corrupt a Wish", you play by just replying to the person who posted before you. All being well, the previous post will contain a tech brand  - such as "Apple". You should reply with another brand which has some relationship with Apple. For example, it could be a brand owned by them (e.g. macOS), the brand of a company that they bought out (e.g. Dark Sky), a company that is well-known to supply them (e.g. LG Display).

But it doesn't have to be one of these - you are allowed and encouraged to make the connections as tenuous and unique as possible - we don't want the thread to devolve into "X  - also a subsidiary of Amazon" - "Y - also a subsidiary of Amazon" - "Z - also a subsidiary of Amazon" and so on.

Please don't connect two brands just because they make a similar/competing product - that's boring! (For example, if we're currently on Windows, don't put Ubuntu unless you can find an connection that isn't to do with them both being operating systems). Also, I hope this goes without saying, but please don't use this thread to promote brands.

Finally, always say what the connection is. For example, if we start with Microsoft, you could reply with "Discord - Microsoft considered acquiring Discord in 2021, but their bid to do so was rejected".

    So let's start with Discord.

Are you using a very cheap HDMI cable? It's not all that likely, but that might not have enough bandwidth for 4K.

It is absolutely our job to regulate how companies operate. We have to "vote with our wallets".

If companies think they can still sell computers if they are exploiting low-paid workers and putting them in dangerous situations, then why would they do anything else?

Maybe the video was uploaded unlisted and only actually made public later. This would result in the video going live with the listed time being longer than it's actually been viewable for.

pythonmegapixel got a reaction from Bianks84 in Is a UPS Worth It?
If the surge protector works properly and there's nothing critical that would be lost in a power cut then there's not really any point.

I live in the UK and there is a battery backup in my house. It only goes into battery mode on the rare occasion an RCD trips or for the odd very short power cut, which occurs once or twice a year as an absolute maximum. (I can't remember the last time we were without power for more than a few minutes).

What is worth nothing, though, is that without a UPS, any power cut will immediately turn off your home internet router, even if your laptop is working. It won't damage the router but you will be without internet unless you are happy using mobile data or whatever.

pythonmegapixel got a reaction from LAwLz in Why are LTT videos so inconsistent with the captioning?
Yes, you have entirely the wrong end of the stick there.

YouTube have turned off captions made by members of the community other than the video creator. It is still entirely possible for the creator to input captions themselves.

And I don't think it's acceptable that they aren't doing this in a timely manner

If all the functionality is duplicated in the web app (which I think it may be, though I'm not totally sure) then I don't really see the problem with this.

pythonmegapixel got a reaction from JogerJ in Inline code
If I use a CODE tag, then
everything I type within it is automatically put onto a new line with black background, like this. However, if you're referring to a single command as part of a sentence, then you don't want that to happen.

    Example of the problem:

Better formatting, which is currently a nuisance on the forum:

Lots of other software formats anything between backticks as code. So `this section of text` becomes this section of text.
Of course, this can be done manually by changing font to Courier New but backticks are far more convenient.

Any chance this could be implemented on the forum?

pythonmegapixel got a reaction from Dat Guy in Switching to Linux from Win(11) - which distro is best for me?
Don't even bother trying to run Adobe Creative Cloud stuff on a Linux machine. Regardless of distro, it doesn't work, and seemingly won't for the foreseeable future.

Office 365 is fine if you don't mind the browser-based versions, but if you need the desktop versions and can't settle for LibreOffice for some reason - again, it simply won't work.

If you're fed up with Windows, try to gradually switch away from Adobe and Microsoft products over a longer period of time, finding Linux-compatible alternatives that you like. Then once most of your needs are met by Linux anyway, you can finally switch operating system.

Bird strikes undoubtedly happen with wind turbines - but assuming the suitable locations are chosen it's not the absolute travesty some would like to paint it as. To put it into perspective, in the UK, orders of magnitude more birds are killed each year by people's domestic cats than by wind turbines. (Yes, there are obviously orders of magnitude more domestic cats than wind turbines, but how much low-CO2 electricity do they produce for us?)

And don't forget fossil-fuel fired power stations are far from blameless when it comes to harming wildlife also.

At the time I predicted that all the melodrama about how this would ruin the platform would turn out to be utter BS, and that everyone would adapt and then pretty much forget about it - just like every other major change YouTube has made.

I am happy to report that I have seen nothing suggesting that my prediction is anything less than entirely correct.

To be fair, that comment was fairly tounge-in-cheek.

On balance I'd probably rather put my shin pads on and use a Mac, but I think that's a simple matter of familiarity. I don't think either is particularly amazing. I use arch btw

Banned because JPEG uses a lossy compression algorithm which is generally optimised for photos, and this can cause rather noticeable artefacts in things such as logos which have blocks of colour, so using PNGs is generally better in that case.
